Solo Carvers
Here we have the sculptures done by solo carvers. Flora and fauna being the general theme for many ice sculptures this year, animals proved to be a popular choice, particularly birds. Of these, the beaver sculpture in the third shot is my favourite.
That next to the last one looks like a Canada goose. We must have 10,000 of them in Greensboro. They never migrate. They like to leave droppings. Everywhere. Will trade them all for the one in ice! Well, maybe like the Biblical story, I'll keep two!
i am falling behind this week, William ... love the leaf! way cool. ( : stay warm this week. we had ice melting today. finally almost got to 50 ... & can you believe they are calling for high 60s at the end of the week? our weather is so silly. needs some meds i think? ha. ha! ( :
Maybe the hardest thing is deciding what to carve. Once they decide that, the execution is probably pretty straightforward for the experienced carvers.
The wings again are wonderful...but I also favor maple leaves, too. It sounds like your weather is cooperating with keeping these sculptures intact and unmelted.
all the wings are so neat!
ReplyDeleteI can understand why birds are such a popular choice, the wing span of the bigger birds looks fantastic carved in ice.
ReplyDeleteThey are marvellous, of course.
ReplyDeleteTomás.
These are quite stunning. A lovely welcome back to blog reading for me - yours was top of my blog list when I dipped in just now. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSchöne Skulpturen die Flügel der Vögel sind klasse.

They are real artists, sad theirs work will not last.
ReplyDelete@Tex: I think so!
ReplyDelete@Grace: I can see it being a challenge.
@Tomas: thanks!
@Linda: you're welcome.
@Noke: thank you.
@Marianne: they are short lived.

Too bad they won't last longer.
ReplyDeleteWonderful works, but you are right: the third has something special!
ReplyDeleteAnother great series, wow !
ReplyDeleteWhat happens to the sculptures once Winterlude is over?
ReplyDeleteBeautifully sculptured series.
ReplyDeleteI think I like all the critters in the second shot the best.
ReplyDeleteLots of great detail here. But I agree the maple leaf stands out over all the others.
ReplyDelete@Janis: those geese are ornery critters!
ReplyDelete@Halcyon: Winterlude itself has come to an end, so that'll be an end to the sculptures today or tomorrow, I imagine.
@VP: the carvers really do beautiful work every year.
@Karl: thank you!
@Norma: today or tomorrow they'll start breaking them down after closing off public access to the park.
@Nancy: thank you!
@Sharon: I like them too.
@Red: it certainly does.
These works sparkle in my imagination, William
ReplyDeleteThey are so special. I think I like the one that looks like a Canada Goose. I wish I could be there to see them.
ReplyDeleteMB
Such a shame that they are ephemeral...
ReplyDeleteThese ice sculptures are such a wonderful celebration of creative art. I must admit, I love the bird sculptures with spread wings.
ReplyDeleteThey must be spectacular at night under lights!
ReplyDeleteSpecially the sculptures of birds with their wings spread are very beautiful

@Cloudia: thank you!
ReplyDelete@MB: it was a fun year for Winterlude!
@Ciel: if they haven't been dismantled already (a possibility given the current weather), they'll be dismantled by week's end.
@Gemma: that takes great care.
@RedPat: they are!
@Jan: birds are a popular subject for these sculptures, after all.
@Beth: well, we're getting a whole lot of snow coming down at present- I'm looking at it falling outside the windows right now!
The goose, I think, would be a close second.
ReplyDeleteWow, very impressive work.
ReplyDeleteThis work is so ornate, hats off to the artists...
ReplyDeleteThey look so delicate and yet they can't be.
ReplyDeleteI'm still favoring the birds, but they are all so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the birds too, especially in the seventh photo. Admire the talent it takes to create these.

ReplyDeleteSuch nice ice! The blue background is a pretty color.
ReplyDeleteI love the artistic ICE figures and I love the BLUE.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Very talented artists.
ReplyDeleteAmazing!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you've taken photos of this ephemeral art!
ReplyDelete@Revrunner: it's a good one.
ReplyDelete@Stefan: definitely!
@Geoff: I agree.
@Mari: they are delicate.
@Lois: definitely!
@Denise: I agree.
@Jack: true.
@Kay: some years you can have a warm up that wrecks havoc, especially with the Canal.
@Linda: I think so too.
@Gunn: so do I.
@Bill: very much so.
@Pat: indeed!
@EG: as am I.
