Visiting The Shrine

This is St. John The Baptist Ukranian Catholic Shrine, north of what I showed you yesterday. The parish itself dates back to 1914, as the only Ukranian Catholic parish in the area. The current church dates to 1987, and has been designated a shrine from the start. It's in a Neo-Byzantine style, built to honour the millennium of Christianity in Kiev. The building features stained glass windows (which I've only seen from the outside) by two artists from Ukraine, done around the turn of the century. The grounds also include the Shevchenko Monument, commemorating the 19th century Ukranian poet, writer, and artist Taras Shevchenko. His name is in many places and on many monuments around the world, including a monument in Washington, DC.

  3. Impressive. It is such a new church. It may be the youngest Byzantine Catholic Church in North America.

  21. @Denise: definitely!

    @Mari: at some point I should go inside.

    @Whisk: I can see that.

    @Linda: neo-Byzantine is extremely rare as an architectural style here.

    @Beth: so do I.

    @Orvokki: quite different!

    @Karl: I certainly think so.

    @Gunn: it's a common style there.

    @Jennifer: definitely!

    @Kay: and I caught it on the right day.
