Memorial Vantages

After the ceremony at the War Memorial (and spending a few minutes getting warmed up), I headed west towards the Canadian War Museum as the clouds were breaking up. Along the way I stopped at the National Firefighters Memorial, where the names of over 1300 firefighters fallen in the line of duty are inscribed on the wall, overseen by a very large statue of a firefighter. I featured this year's national service herehere, and here if you happened to miss those posts.

I wanted a side view of the wall, to show the vegetation that grows on the north side of it. For good measure, the Library and Archives Canada headquarters and portions of the Parliament Buildings made it into this shot.

Across the street from the Memorial is another one that is under construction, standing between here and the museum, which you can see in the background. This is the National Holocaust Monument, presently a work in progress, a stylized but formidable memorial from the looks of the conceptual drawing. I'll be back here periodically to document the process of its construction.

  4. Interesting about the Holocaust Museum. Visited the one in Poland and could have spent much, much more time there.

  6. Firefighters do a fantastic and very difficult job. They deserve the kudos we lay on them. So glad to see that Holocaust museum. I'm afraid as the years go by it will get harder and harder to remember; this is why some seem unafraid of what's happening in this country. The deniers need to continue to be denied a place at the historical table!

  7. I'll bet you'll keep your eye on the national holocaust museum. It looks like it could be interesting and controversial.

  8. So many names ... so many fallen heroes ... That's impressive.
    And that goes for the new Holocaust Monument too, I hope you'll shows us some more of this in the future.

  9. @Francisco: thank you!

    @Marianne: the second one is long overdue. I'm not sure when it'll be finished, though. I'll have to look around and see if I can find something.

    @Nancy: the design of this monument really intrigues me. It seemed to be a stalled project for awhile, not really sure why, but now it's coming along briskly.

    @Bill: I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

    @Pat: this, as I understand it, is going to be something quite different.

    @Whisk: very much so.

    @Sharon: the surface area of the new monument appears to be bigger than the Firefighters Memorial, but not too much so. I think they'll suit each other well.

    @Lowell: a lot of survivors are passing away as time goes on.

    @Red: I'm not sure if this monument will be controversial, not the way that the proposed Victims of Communism monument would have been, but that was largely because of Harper's machinations. However that project turns out, it'll be far scaled down and in a completely different spot.

    @Jan: a lot of fire fighters have given their lives in service down through more than a century.

  14. I am sure glad I don't have to mow that grass shown in your header.

  15. @Beth: both are good subjects for monuments.

    @Tamago: they deserve that recognition.

    @Linda: I would like to visit that museum.

    @Cloudia: very much so.

    @RedPat: fortunately it's been shelved. Whatever comes of it in the end is going to be radically different from what he wanted, and a lot smaller. It's not that the idea was bad, but that vision was awful.

    @Revrunner: me too.

  18. Nice shots! Your city certainly puts together fitting memorials. The holocaust memorial looks like a very interesting one. (I hope the U.S. isn't entering into an era where people begin to deny it...can you tell I'm being overcome by paranoia and fear?)

  19. I love the Firemen's Memorial William.. it seems that each new memorial created changes design, and I guess that's a good thing, things need to change up for future generations to remember.. as long as the old memorials are looked after with the respect they deserve.

  22. @Mari: quite true.

    @Catalyst: I agree.

    @Kay: unfortunately it's going in that direction. The monument when it was completed worked out quite nicely, I think.

    @Grace: that is true.

    @Norma: so do I.

    @Jennifer: thanks!
