Views Of The Rideau Canal

Patterson Creek pre-dated the Rideau Canal, a small stream that originally ran to the Rideau River east of here. When the Canal was built, the creek ended up emptying into it. Portions of its western reaches disappeared under landscaping efforts in the 1890s, but the eastern stretch is still visible today from the Canal to Central Park. During the skating season it is home to a stretch of the Canal that offers a bit of a safe haven for children and other skaters who'd like a quieter stretch to skate on. This bridge spans the way in.

Here we see the view down the skateway on Patterson Creek.

A chalet has long stood in the parkland bordering the creek, offering skaters a spot to change their skates. I like the architecture.

I took one more shot of the small bridge and continued for a bit along the shoreline of the Canal for my next destination.

That happens to be the next bridge, the Pretoria Bridge, which links the north ends of the Glebe and Old Ottawa East neighbourhoods. The name is a nod to the veterans of the South African War, and the bridge is a lift bridge, with its middle section capable of being raised to admit taller boats on the Canal during the season. A bridge for the 417 freeway stands to the north of the Pretoria, less visually appealing than its older counterpart.

  1. That makes me nostalgic to see the skaters on the frozen river. Our winter passed by without any ice on the canals...

  2. Beautiful snowy scenes especially the ones with the small bridge. Over here, we are sweating away in the heat.

  13. One would certainly have to watch when skating as there are so many walkers. I notice one group standing in the middle of the canal for photos.

  17. The views of bridges from below are often only available to boaters...so it's neat to have ice there upon which to walk/skate .

  18. A century or so ago there was a lot of skating on the Fens of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Some say that it was the home of the modern sport of speed skating. Alas, it is rare now to see any ice on the fen, let alone enough for skating.

  27. These photos took me back to my kid-hood in North Dakota when I nearly lived on ice skates through those long winters. The streets were even icy allowing me to skate to school! I like your photos of Patterson Creek best.
