Winter Wandering Through The Cemetery

I went down to southern Ontario for a few days in early January; the next few posts will reflect that. I paid a visit to Woodlawn Cemetery on one of those days. This is found in the city of Guelph, at the heart of Wellington County. When I took these shots, there wasn't much snow on the ground. It being shortly after Christmas, here and there I noticed Christmas wreaths at some of the tombstones.

The building here is near the entrance, housing the offices for the cemetery.

I carried on with my walk.

A memorial stone here includes a Union Jack beside it; the names of six soldiers who died overseas during World War One are inscribed on it.

The wreath we see here is here for a specific reason. The McCrae family plot is here, with the name on several stones. Inscribed on the flat stone we see here is the name of their most famous son, John McCrae, whose burial place is in Europe. McCrae served in World War One and wrote the poem in Flanders Fields.

  3. Is there anything more lonely than a cemetery in winter. The Christmas wreaths are a nice addition in the winter cold.

  4. Beautiful cemetery...and the snow really brings out the stones...contrast is improved. I enjoy a cemetery stroll sometimes.

  15. Gone but not forgotten... Interestingly enough, cemeteries here in Saudi Arabia consist of all unmarked graves. Islam states specific rules about it - like no plastering over and no structure should be erected over a grave, no sitting on graves, etc.

  17. I'd like walking around there and reading the gravestones. The two cemeteries I walk around mornings are both small!

  18. It's a lovely and peaceful spot, isn't it? With some beautiful headstones. I'm rather fond of cemeteries (though I don't look forward to spending eternity in one!)

  21. There is a blogger who no longer blogs, who lives in Guelph. Several of her blogs concerned finding tombstones and sending pictures to friends and relatives of the deceased who did not live in the area. I found that a very fulfilling volunteer activity.
