At the end of November, I attended an event at the arena at Lansdowne Park. Star Wars, the original of the franchise, was being shown over two nights- the last of November and the first of December. It was being done with the music score performed live by an orchestra while the movie plays on the screen, and included French subtitles, what with the city being bilingual. I've seen this done before with a concert performance/ screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Beforehand, members of the 501st Legion, a group of Star Wars cosplayers, were around for those taking photographs.
Inside the arena, which is nestled underneath the stadium's north stands, the orchestra was warming up on stage, with the movie screen overhead.
The film featured an intermission, with good timing- pausing just as the Millennium Falcon arrives at the Death Star as seen in the film. I stepped out to take more pictures of the 501st Legion.
R2-D2, a full sized version of the droid, was the centre of attention, rolling about and interacting with people.
Still the most foul mouthed character in movie history- every word he said has been bleeped out.
I told Lord Vader that his son and daughter were making out again.
Back in I went as intermission was coming to a close.
When the credits rolled, the crowd remained in place until the orchestra finished every note, and gave them a standing ovation. The concept of a live orchestra with a movie is a good one, and the place did Lord of the Rings a few months back. I'd love to see Gladiator done this way.
I missed the convention in Melbourne last year. It looks cool.
