The Treasures Of The Grand Hall

I begin today with a look outside from the Grand Hall at the Museum of History. In a reflecting pool lowered for the winter sits a sculpture, with the Ottawa River and the Alexandra Bridge in the background. This is 'namaxsala (To Travel In A Boat Together). A 2013 sculpture by the First Nations artist Mary Anne Barkhouse, it always draws my eye during visits here.

More views inside.

Here we have the plaster cast of a marvelous sculpture by Haida artist Bill Reid. The Spirit Of Haida Gwaii is an expressive sculpture deeply rooted in his cultural roots. A bronze version is found outside the Canadian embassy in Washington, while a jade version is at the airport in Vancouver. At top, a glimpse of Morning Star can be seen. We'll look at it tomorrow.

Parliament Hill is seen through the windows here.

We'll pick up here tomorrow.

  6. I love your Indigenous art being given such prominence in the museum. If only we treated our Native neighbors as well.
