And So Right Is Left And Up Is Down

There are a pair of replica 18th century cannons down at Dow's Lake, down by the office headquarters for the H.M.C.S. Carleton, which is in the process of being completely rebuilt. The royal seal of George III is on both of them. Do you prefer it right side up?

Or on its side?

This shot from last year before the construction really got going gives you a sense of the surroundings; the cannons flank a Navy monument here at the lake.

  2. Either way, as long as it isn't pointing at me. Really like your title, it sounds like a perfect for a post about our nice little elections today.

  7. I like right side up! But on its side looks great, too :-) Love the design of the royal seal. That is gorgeous! The big anchor looks very elegant. That must be very nice place to have a walk.

    Have a wonderful day!

  8. You do have a lot of weapons up there!

  9. @Jen: thanks!

    @Anita: it could have described that nicely! I was actually thinking of a bit of dialogue from one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

    @Tomas: thanks!

    @Tahiti: some might prefer the other way.

    @Luis: so did I.

    @Cloudia: if only we could have the car in between the cannons.

    @Marianne: it's a distinctive design.

    @Tanya: I could have put it upside down.

    @VP: thanks!

    @Tamago: it's been a bit awkward walking around there in the last few months with the construction going on.

    @Norma: oh, yes!

  12. It sure adds a bit of color to an otherwise dark surface.

  13. I like it right side up! It looks regal. :)

  14. The feeling many have in the States after this election day.

  15. @Tex: I thought it was an interesting contrast to have them placed there. And no doubt the seal would have been on many a cannon.

    @Jan: I figured adding that one in would suit things well, but I had to go with a published shot- the construction has had that area looking a bit different as of late. I should have actually documented the construction!

    @Judy: well of course cannons never got painted purple... at least back then!

    @Sharon: that appears to be the consensus.

    @Linda: and yet the original shot was done on the side.

    @Birdman: so it seems!

  17. Good question, but it's pretty!

    Caught a nasty bug and haven't been visiting, but am better now.

  18. If its up then one is not shooting at someone else. Right?

  19. Amazing just how decorative some of these old cannons can be.

  20. I am so corner to corner ;) I like right-side up also.

  21. Being rather traditional, I prefer it standing. Therefore, it would not be aimed at me...

  22. Replica ... so never fired in anger, I suspect. And that paint would not have been on the originals. George III, eh? In Hyde Park in Sydney there is a canon, but I think it is George IV. Shall check.

  23. @Lois: the colours do stand out.

    @Bibi: nice to see you back.

    @MB: these ones can only be aimed at private yachts!

    @Revrunner: they certainly make for interesting things to come across on a walk.

    @RedPat: that seems to be the consensus.

    @Lauren: I wonder if I should have put it in upside down too.

    @Denise: it looks like we've got a unanimous thing going on.

    @Halcyon: and another nod!

    @Stuart: with good reason!

    @Ciel: aimed at someone else, that's fine.

    @Julie: we have a number of the real ones in the War Museum. They'd never be left in the elements.

  24. I really don't care. After all, I'm a Yankee and George the III was never really popular here.

  25. Isn't there a protocol that dictates it should be upright (as with a flag and how it should be flown?)?
    (I'll be out of town for a few days & won't be commenting - see you when I get back...)

  26. Hmmm... I think I like it right side up.

  27. How many photos do you suppose you have saved up? I had cleared my tablet of photos and already I'm quickly stacking them up again. And so fast.

  28. I haven't been there is ages! Thanks for the photos!

  29. I like it either way! This looks like an interesting place to spend some time.

  30. @Mari: with good reason.

    @Kay: I don't know the protocol!

    @Linda: either way works for me.

    @Whisk: I have a whole lot stashed away at this point.

    @Peter: thanks!

    @EG: thank you.

    @Jennifer: it's changed a lot.

    @Pat: I certainly think so.

    @Mariusz: thank you.
