Aslan Looks Quite Irritable Today

I do enjoy photographing the lions that stand guard outside the entrances to the main post office on Sparks Street. There are two for each door, with a total of six. They do remind me of the C.S. Lewis character Aslan, and they always collect at least a bit of snow in the winter.

  1. Definitely an Aslan-esque looking lion. Irritable? Perhaps. I catch some rather regal bearing.

  2. The lion has a face that looks like the boss there he is.

  4. Love the lions William, they're not called the king of the jungle for nought! Tres regal.

  6. Great to see my sign of the zodiac stand so pride overthere.
    The snow gives the lions a nice extra touch.

  7. @Kay: I think they'd like someone to clear off the snow.

    @Tomas: definitely the bosses.

    @Gracita: thanks!

    @Grace: in this case they fit!

    @Marianne: the shields add to that.

    @VP: they certainly are!

    @Jan: I have seen more snow on them this winter. Usually it blows off.

  8. Kind of a snooty lion, don't you think? :-)

  9. I love a good lion, too. Remind me of Gryffindor from Harry Potter.

  10. I wonder why the post office needs so much protection.

  11. Well, they are impressive and I'd be lyin' if I said anything different. C.S. Lewis. Wow. I've read most of what he wrote about God and stuff. At one time I thought he knew what he was talking about. ;)

  12. You are quite right! The snow has a certain touch, too. OUrs is pretty much gone, except down in the deep wetland!

  13. He looks fierce--and yes, regal. But that's the lion's right as king!

  14. @Revrunner: I can see that too.

    @Janis: I hadn't thought of that!

    @EG: they're probably holding a Hitchcock Maguffin in there.

    @Lowell: oh boy!

    @Jennifer: here it seems to be sticking around. The freezing rain the other day has coated it all in glaze.

    @Norma: that is true!

  15. I'm afraid most people walk by and miss the symbolism.

  16. Very regal lions! Though they do look a bit disapproving. :)

  24. @Red: true. And there's a lot of it there.

    @Halcyon: I'll have to photograph them in the summer, see if they're in a better mood. Of course, then they might be griping about the humidity.

    @Beth: I like the variety of their shields. One of them I notice has George VI's insignia. The building dates back to the 30s, as I recall.

    @Marleen: they might!

    @Denise: sometimes when the snow's wet and sticky, the whole front of them can get covered in it. Usually drier snow tends to blow off.

    @Sharon: they look rather noble, among other things!

    @Gunn: they certainly do.

    @Linda: that too!

    @Ciel: of course then who in Ottawa would be the White Witch? Well, there's the interim Tory leader Rona Ambrose who probably fits the bill for malevolence and evil.

    @Noke: complacent though they may be, the shields are still a requirement.

    @RedPat: they're overdue for their yearly annual sacrifice of one passerby.

    @Gemma: they were well sculpted.

  26. Yes, Ashlan had a certain nobility that this sculpture captures.

  28. @Debra: thank you!

    @Tex: I think so.

    @Geoff: indeed.

    @Mari: I agree.

    @Cloudia: with the voice of Liam Neeson!

    @Lois: they do seem that way.

    1. I have to photograph these again sometime. The building's been hidden away largely by scaffolding for awhile now because of maintenance and refurbishment, and the lions have been hidden away by wooden surroundings

  30. Those lions are pretty haughty. Of course, all lions are haughty.
