Frozen Sculptures

Picking up where I left off yesterday, a mastodon ice sculpture has been erected on behalf of the Canadian Museum of Nature, where later this year a special exhibit on the ice ages will be held. As the accompanying banner says, mastodons are not the same kind of animal as mammoths.

Interactive light sculptures are part of Winterlude this year at various spots, including here on Sparks Street. This is called Iceberg, and we'll see it again in a coming post. The sounds of an iceberg resonate within, and can change based on how many people are walking through.

Until recent months this was the main branch in the city for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. They've pulled up stakes for other quarters. For the moment, it's unused, but lit up with spotlights for Winterlude.

A carver was just finished working on these smaller sculptures.

And for today I finish up with this more abstract sculpture.

  1. ...those that are lit with colored lights pop! I hope that your temps stay cold enough so that they don't melt.

  2. We used to have a public light show like that in Cambridge, but I haven't heard anything about it for the last couple of years. Ice sculptures are, of course, out of the question in our relatively mild climate.

  10. Great mastadon...and I surely wouldn't know the difference if one walked up to me with a mammoth as well. Glad you told us the last was non-objective, as I can't make out details with all the pretty facets, except maybe the next to the last is a bird.

  11. That's a huge ice sculpture to begin with, and a delicate one to finish with. Thank you for the tour. :-)

  15. That iceberg lighted sculpture was in Scottsdale a couple of years ago. I'm pretty sure I posted a photo of it. How interesting to see it again.

  19. Wintelude is a great compensation for having to endure the long cold dark days., I enjoyed both posts .,, those ice sculptures are fabulous ... it’s such a wonderful Zen thing to do, creating that beautiful but highly temporary art. (Except now that your great photos preserve them eternally!)

  26. Beautiful sculpting here William, hope they use the Canadian Imperial Bank building for something useful and not let it sit empty for years.

  27. @Maia: thank you.

    @Joanne: it is.

    @Denise: I think so too.

    @Kay: I like it too.

    @Grace: hopefully something really worthwhile. There's a former bank up the street that for years was a stamp store, and has been turned into an upscale restaurant some years ago.
