A Surprise For A Finale

Covid has denied us the pleasures of a real Winterlude for two years. In 2021, the ice sculptures could only be seen virtually, with carvers doing their own works at home. Such was the case this year- Canadian carvers showed their sculptures online. But there was one exception, and I saw it during my walk on Dow's Lake. I noticed the shape and the coloured lights on the east shore. It was, in fact, an ice sculpture, out in the open. I was delighted to see it.

I knew I wasn't going to get a chance to come down in the evening, so I took a lot of shots, walking around the perimeter. It had an Olympics theme, with athletes carved into several large walls of ice and a Canadian flag as the backdrop. It was a challenge to photograph- I wondered how it would look on a sunny day or at night in full colour- but a pleasure to see. As someone who loves the winter and loves Winterlude and has desperately missed those ice sculptures... this was the equivalent of an oasis in the desert to a thirsty man.

Enjoy these views as my finale. Hopefully Winterlude 2023 will be back to normal.

  13. This ice sculpture looked so crystal clear! I also love winter. Covid-19 has changed so much and is always in the back of everyone's mind. I hope times can return to normal one day soon and we all don't have to worry all the time.

  15. You did find a nice surprise on that walk, William. It's amazing how clear the sculpture looked and I wondered if the cold was a factor.

  16. What a nice surprise! Someone just did that on their own out in a public place.... totally safe outside like that I would think (unless he or she attracted a huge, unvaccinated crowd while working). I am in hopes that life will get back to halfway normal soon (although normal for us doesn't include ice sculptures, so I always appreciate experiencing this beautiful art virtually through your eyes!)
