Water Gallery

The Water Gallery looks at life in water, both the sea and freshwater. Narwhals hang overhead here.

The heart of the space is occupied by the skeleton of a blue whale. This is huge.

A display case features scale models of various whales, with the blue whale being the biggest of them all.

Birds can spend vast amounts of time at sea, and some that do are also displayed here.

One of the less photogenic residents of the deep.

But it's that whale that commands so much attention.

A video screen shows footage of life in the oceans. We'll pick up here again tomorrow.

  4. Life sure is a mystery somehow. I saw such a skeleton in Bremen (I think, or Wilhelmshaven) years and years ago.
    Un-imaginable. So huge.

  5. Many birds live at sea as you point out, coming ashore only to breed. We have almost completed our job of ruining terrestrial habitat, and we we are well on the way to doing it to the oceans. Fish stocks are plummeting everywhere, the temperature of the oceans is rising, and we are daily filling it with more and more garbage. What a wise and caring species we are.

  6. Great display, you've got to be there to really feel the size of that giant, I think.

  9. It is fascinating how whales were land mammals that returned to the sea and then some species became so huge.

  14. I've seem belugas many times and they are large animals so it's hard think that they are classified as a small whale.
