The last Sunday in September had a service on Parliament Hill. It is an annual tradition commemorating fallen police and peace officers, and members of forces from across the country and even American officers converge here on the Hill for the service each year, which includes a march past of officers.
Behind Centre Block, this is the national police memorial wall, a series of inscribed panels with the names of police and peace officers who have fallen in the line of duty. Wreaths, candles, and small mementos were placed here that day. Views of both sides of the Ottawa River are plentiful at this spot.
Great pictures and what a wonderful building.
ReplyDeleteNice "celebrations". Good that the sacrifices are remembered.
ReplyDeleteA fine tradition that, long may it be so
ReplyDeleteI agree. It looks like a fine tradition.
ReplyDeleteI feel touched to see this. Wonderful tribute.
ReplyDeleteThis gives a very good idea about Canada.
ReplyDeleteTomás.
A touching tradition to keep alive.
ReplyDeleteAnd a lovely day for the commemoration
ReplyDeleteLooks like it was such a nice day. Wonderful event to tribute the fallen officers and force members.
ReplyDeleteA fine tradition and some really great photos!
ReplyDeleteThere's a similar national memorial for fallen Firefighters, and a aervice was held for them on Sept. 15th. We expect to be there next year when Will's name is added.
ReplyDeleteLooks like some idiot spammer got past the filters, partner....
ReplyDeleteWonderful event!
ReplyDeleteMagnificent looking building and a grand memorial event! Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteAlways glad when people remember the fallen.

Love photos, William! I was at my local supermarket the other day and saw a veteran sitting at the front of the store with the poppies. I always give something, and even though I don't have much I try to give something, and so I did. He was a kindly gentleman who thanked me and attached the poppy onto the lapel of my jacket. November 11th, Remembrance Day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fine event. I'm amazed at how many people there are involved in the commemoration and the parade(s). Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteA deserved tribute. The clock tower is really high. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteYou've shown a a very colorful event that that recognizes the efforts of our protectors.
ReplyDelete@Whisk: I was really pleased with that first shot.
ReplyDelete@Halcyon: there are a lot of names on those panels, and room for more panels.
@Bill: it is a very good tradition.
@Stuart: it's a stressful, dangerous job. They deserve this. And a lot of people came out to pay respects.
@Lauren: I was glad to have gotten up there for this.
@Tomas: it does!
@Marianne: I agree.
@Mo: it was great weather.
@Tamago: it was a very nice day.
@VP: thanks!
There is never too much celebration of servicemen and women. Great photos of their colorful uniforms.
ReplyDelete@Furry Gnome: It has been awhile since I've photographed the national and city firefighters memorials. I'll have to do that- the national one is right across from the War Museum, where I'll be next week.
ReplyDelete@Norma: got rid of the vermin, fortunately.
@EG: it really is.
@Nancy: thanks.
@Janis: it's the right thing to do.
@Linda: I always get several poppies. Two of which will go on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a location in the War Museum on November 11th.
@Lowell: a lot of people came out.
@Jose: the tower really dominates the Hill.
@Red: it's a fitting ceremony, very dignified.
That is a most impressive turnout William. I think the police sometimes get a bad rap which is a shame because they do an amazing job and I thank heavens for the young people who still go into the force today.
ReplyDeleteObviously a good turnout for the event!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is quite a celebration.
ReplyDeleteLove those mounties. I always think of Dudley Do-Right from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. ;)
ReplyDeletelooks like a large turn out. gorgeous flowers & colors ( :
ReplyDeleteLooks like a beautiful celebration of a sad affair.
ReplyDeleteAnd just look at that sky! Much better than commemorating under pouring rain!
ReplyDelete@Linda: thank you!
ReplyDelete@Grace: most of them do their jobs and do it well... it's the few bad apples you have to watch out for. Unfortunately it's the bad apples that get attention, it sometimes seems.
@RedPat: there were a whole lot of police from all over, particularly in Ontario. The first out of town insignia I saw coming downtown was a truck from St. Thomas.
@Sharon: it was a big crowd.
@Pat: I think first and foremost of the television series Due South.
@Beth: thanks!
@Meradeth: as it turns out it's commemorated on the same date in other countries.
@Ciel: yes, it was a beautiful day.
The red of the uniform always looks so grand. Impressive lineup of bikes and the colourful wreath in the last photo is beautiful
ReplyDeleteMarvelous photos of this very special event. It certainly draws quite a crowd, good to see.
ReplyDeletelooks like a wonderful commemoration.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive ranks. It is good to see such a large turn out.
ReplyDeleteFantastic to see, we should never forget those who give everything....
ReplyDeleteI sure like those bright blue uniforms.
ReplyDeleteThis was certainly quite a celebration to honor officers and nice that the weather was also cooperative and the crowds were significantly large.
ReplyDeleteThe U.S. has a similar commemoration in Washington D.C. but I think it may be smaller and quieter. Yours looks like a large ceremony.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful day for a wonderful tradition. Our small towns and cities always have their own celebration for Memorial Day and for Veteran's Day.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pics, Sir Wills.
ReplyDeleteStirring!
ReplyDelete@Gemma: thanks!
ReplyDelete@Denise: it was quite a day.
@Tex: I think it's quite fitting. I missed it this year.
@Anita: it certainly is.
@Geoff: quite true.
@Janey: they stand out.
@Beatrice: it was a good day, weather wise.
@Kay: this is definitely a big ceremony.
@Mari: thank you.
@Shelly: thanks.
@Jennifer: definitely.
