Behold The Morning Star

Beyond the Spirit Of Haida Gwaii, and just visible in one of the shots of that sculpture yesterday, lies a large mural high over the south end of the Grand Hall. Morning Star is by the Dene artist Alex Janvier, done in 1993, and remains my favourite work of art in the national capital region.

We'll take another look at it in a few days, but I moved from here into the First Peoples Hall, which was closed due to Covid restrictions the last time I visited. This series of corridors features exhibits on the various First Peoples of Canada, from early times to the modern day. The nearby entrance- really the exit if one visits this area in the way it's supposed to be done- features a blended picture of past and present. On the nearby Gatineau shore of the Ottawa River, Indigenous people are encamped. On the opposite shore is Parliament Hill and the Chateau Laurier as they look today.

A video display features stories by First Peoples in their own words.

A mix of items displayed here; some contemporary, and some historical. Display panels examine them in detail. The coat at right has national significance, as the last photo today explains.
