Visiting Jacques Cartier Park

 East of the Museum of History lies Jacques Cartier Park, a large park along the shoreline of the Ottawa River. At its main entrance is a larger than life statue of a larger than life man. Maurice "Rocket" Richard was one of the best to ever play the game of hockey, an icon of the Montreal Canadiens team. This impressive statue balances most of its weight on one of the feet and the stick, all while capturing the resolute determination of the man. Around it in May, tulips are in full bloom.

Moving into the park, there are two large flowerbeds with tulips for the festival, usually a single colour in a given stretch before shifting to a neighbouring colour. Every once in awhile one sees a rogue tulip from previous years.

  1. Always great with a hockey player.

  2. The statue of Maurice 'rocket' Richard is very impressive.

  3. Hockey means nothing at all to me - but I certainly like the tulips.

  4. What a spectacular sculpture. The tulips, well they are always enchanting.

  5. @Stefan: and he was one of the best.

    @Cloudia: thank you.

    @Italiafinlandia: thanks.

    @Rosemary: I agree.

    @John: I imagine it never caught on in your part of the world.

    @Maywyn: indeed.

    @Jan: I can see that.

    @Gemel: definitely.

  6. The sculpture is cool. Love the tulip gardens. Take care, enjoy your day and happy weekend!

  7. Great statue and such beautiful flowers again.

  8. Having lived in Québec I can attest that Richard was akin to a saint - more revered in fact.

  9. ...these are fabulous beds of tulips!

  10. Those flower beds are beautiful.

  11. I remember when the "Rocket" played against the Boston Bruins. Montreal was a powerhouse back in those days. The tulips look nice highlighting the statue.

  12. The Rocket statue is really quite powerful!

  13. Tulips make such an amazing backdrop.

  14. @Anvilcloud: definitely.

    @Eileen: thank you.

    @magiceye: definitely.

    @MDP: that it is.

    @RedPat: they are.

    @Bill: I always remember the late blogger Birdman, who was a Bruins fan and saw the Rocket. He'd say they growled about the Habs but wished they were Bruins.

    @Mari: thank you.

    @Jeanie: it is.

    @Joanne: they do.

  16. William - gorgeous. Is it bad that I am most intrigued by the rogue tulips?

  17. They do wonderful honoring of their hockey players ~ beautiful park and the sculpture is awesome ~
