Marble Dancer

Today we start with Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant), a portrait by George Romney of the Mohawk chief and Loyalist who came to Canada with his people following the American Revolution. This was painted in 1776.

My favourite sculpture of the Gallery. Dancer is a marble sculpture by Antonio Canova, done from 1818-22. This is the second version of the sculpture, with the first at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

I close out today with this landscape. View Of Lake Nemi dates to 1748, and is by Claude-Joseph Vernet.

  4. Not hard to see why you are drawn to The Dancer, William. To achieve that detail from a block of stone is amazing.

  15. That sculpture's detail is so beautiful! I don't know how the sculptor was able to portray the gossamer draping so well on her figure.
