My first shot today is taken from a traffic island on Elgin Street looking north into the heart of Confederation Square- the National War Memorial surrounded by landmarks. Throughout this area, tulips were in bloom in planter boxes.
Looking over to the right, one of those landmarks, the National Arts Centre, with its glass tower featuring projected images.
I started making my way towards the Memorial, stopping to take this shot.
The Memorial commemorates the Canadians who fought and died of two World Wars, the Korean War, the South African War, and the Afghan War, as well as those in military service. Dedicated in 1939 months before the outbreak of the Second World War, it is a place of remembrance on a regular basis.
The tulips include some planted in regular flowerbeds around the perimeter, as well as planters on the south side of the grounds.
Moving west from the Memorial, I took more shots of tulips in planters, with Parliament Hill beyond.
How important it is to have war memorials in the centre of town, surrounded by greenery, flowers and space for the public to gather. Otherwise once the parents and siblings of the dead heroes age, who will remember the young men?
ReplyDeleteYou are spot on in this insight.
DeleteThey got this memorial right.
DeleteI certainly think so too.
DeleteThis really is a wonderful time of the year in your place. Sad war memorials are needed and that "we" never learn...
ReplyDeleteSo it seems.
DeleteIt is really different seeing the tulips surrounded by buildings. However, they certainly add a cheerfulness. I really love the second last photo.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteGreat islands of colour. I’ve never wondered before how these (and all other gardens) look for the rest of the summer.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to take some shots perhaps at Major's Hill in August or September to show the difference.
Delete...I remember this area well.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great area.
DeleteLove the tulips and the monuments, the Arts Center is a pretty building. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteThe tulips are beautiful, the monuments harrowing.
ReplyDeleteTrue.
DeleteNice to see how the tulips are embedded in the city.
ReplyDeleteIt is.
DeleteTulips everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThey are.
DeleteThe 2nd pic is my favourite today!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteVery appropriate to have he tulips go along with the war memorial.
ReplyDeleteIt is.
DeleteThe tulips look beautiful in the mixed beds.
ReplyDeleteThey do.
DeleteGood morning, and how wonderful to still have such lovely tulips, they are over the top gorgeous. Your city is so dynamic and beautiful too. Enjoy all that you do and learn that history and bring it back to us!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteNice pictures.
ReplyDeleteProjecting large images on buildings and screens has an Android electric sheep vibe.
When they put additions onto the building, that glass tower was the right touch.
DeleteWhen I stayed in Ottawa, I visited that War Memorial numerous times. It always drew me back.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good spot for it.
