I begin with this bed of tulips, dominated by dark purple, but including reds and whites.

THough I love purple tulips, these just don't read much at all...if you know what I mean. They had adequate light, a darker or lighter background, but the shadows of their leaves are more evident. That's too bad. The white and reds are beautiful!
Maybe the time of day also a factor.
