I Have A Couple Of Jokers In The Deck

Free Comic Book Day was held in comic shops here in North America on Saturday, with multiple companies putting out freebies at shops. It also brought out people in costume. I went to two shops downtown. These were taken in The Comic Book Shoppe, and the place was busy. I had to take shots as opportunity allowed and people milled about.

We had two Jokers. "Why so serious?"

An unlikely pair, given that they're in different comic universes, and he's a hero, whilst she's not, this pair posed as Captain America and Harley Quinn.

There was even a Wolverine in the mix (admittedly I tend to think of the comics character as the Drunken Hobbit), and he was getting the attitude (and the sideburns) just right.

And we finish off with Rogue of the X-Men, otherwise known as Our Lady Of The Blessed White Hair Streak.

  1. Great post, William. This brings back great childhood memories for me. When I was a little girl, (and back then the comic books were 12 cents each), my father would purchase comic books for me on a regular basis. I loved the Harvey collection (Little Audrey, Little Lulu, Casper the Friendly Ghost, etc.) Those were great times.

  3. It's always nice to willing photo subjects! I go way back with comics and unlike many people my age, I tend to like the more modern ones. We have a family member who is pretty big in the comic world. So much work goes into modern style comics. I guess that is why I like them better.

  5. The only comic book I can recall reading was Archie and my friend and I used share them amongst ourselves. The stories in those were quite mild compared to super hero comics. Looks like the folks you photographed were really serious about their characters and their costumes showed it.

  17. Must be great for children to meet their heroes. I don't think we celebrate that day overhere, so I hope it's no shame I only know the Joker ...

  19. There's been a sea change in comics since the days when I read them. We just passed them around or threw them away. Now they're celebrated, collector's items.

@Sharon: they could be called the Unusual Suspects.

@Kay: though some comic books these days deserve to be thrown out. There's a writer I seriously dislike...

  31. I like Our Lady .... She's cute. I just sold some old comic books. Nothing great in the bunch, though. BTW, if you have an original Superman comic, I'll give you a dollar for it! :)
