Signs Of Spring

A few posts back I showed you Central Park in the Glebe. This slope is on the east side of Bank Street. The  small blue-purple flowers are always an early spring arrival, coating this shaded area.

At the south end of the Glebe, this pond is linked to the Rideau Canal. When I took this shot a few days back, the water levels were being raised to summer levels. Compare it to this view of the pond in winter. That object there in the midst of the pond is the inukshuk in the winter post, still standing.

I took this shot on the weekend, where the Canal widens out into Dow's Lake. For now, it makes for a good header image.

Another weekend shot, down in the Byward Market. The owner said this Ford is a 1914 model. I didn't ask the type, but it's a beauty. It's the oldest car I've ever seen, and it's something you would never take out of storage until you have warm weather.

Up on Plaza Bridge this weekend, I took a shot of the Canal, with the Conference Centre on the left and the National Arts Centre on the right. Water levels are back up to normal, and the tour boats are back for the season.

Coming alongside the east side of the bridge, I looked down the staircase here leading down to the Canal side.The couple down below were having photographs taken by a photographer out of sight below; the intimacy suggested they might have been having engagement photos done. I liked the moment, so I snapped some shots.

  3. Well I enjoyed seeing the arrival of spring evolve through your posts since the beginning of May. I had practically no internet access while on the road, so I have a lot of catching up to do. Thanks again for all your (unanswered) comments on ADP while I was gone !

  4. Although that old Ford is a beauty, I mostly like your first and the last photo. They clearly tell spring is in the air.

  6. You have such a beautiful city. It's funny that for you spring is just arriving. I told Lois Anne yesterday that it feels like the middle of summer here. Getting up to 90 degrees most days now. :) Love that gorgeous Model T.

  10. You have captured wonderful vistas here William.. I especially loved the meadow of blue spring flowers in the first shot and the sneaky peek at the romantic couple in the last !

  11. Beautiful shots William! I just love that car. It reminds me of my grandmother telling me stories about her first car. It was a Ford Model T Roadster and her father bought it for her when she was 16 in 1922!

  12. Yes, I can see the signs of spring are arriving in your area. The trees still have a little ways to go.

  13. Gladly spring is another story: even the austere architecture looks more kind with patches of spring here and there...

  14. It is hard to believe that not too long ago you were posting all the snow pics. I am glad Spring finally is making a showing.
    The car is a beauty as is the couple in love. MB

  15. @Jane and Chris: and then there's blackfly season...

    @Grace: thank you!

    @Luis: thanks!

    @Lois: I looked at this one, and though it was a decade younger, I was reminded of a story Ken Burns did in a documentary called Horatio's Drive about a guy who drove cross country in 1903 in something quite similar.

    @Sharon: some trees are getting their leaves early, others are just starting to bud.

    @VP: it does!

    @MB: thanks!

  26. The differences in the pond are certainly dramatic! I love to see fields of spring flowers. Nice shots.

  27. I don't think I would dare take a car like that out in traffic.
    Did I mention how much I love your header pic. Sometime, I wish we had a river running through the city, they have a much companionable feel to them than a great lake.

  28. The photos are such a great "slice of the season" photos!

  31. Oh yes, I sometimes join in the photography of brides and grooms here in Waikiki.

    So nice to see my old friend the canal. One teen Summer I hitched a ride on a riverboat queen - actually a snug private boat owned by a married teacher couple who took me from Ottawa to Montreal. I assisted in the locks. The last, giant, mechanical lock took our craft so deep into a cement trough that it felt bug-like, but then a gate opened and we where magically at JUST the same level as Quebec! The rest of my travels that Summer, and my return home to the states are forgotten. The Rideau? NEVER! (40+ years on I do remember something about a festival called Strawberry Fields held in conjunction with motorcycle races. . . strange as that sounds. But it was (I think) the Summer after Woodstock. . . . . . . .

    @Hamilton: I wouldn't dare either.

    @Greensboro: thank you!

    @Mari: thanks!

    @Denise: it was such a pleasure to see a car like that. And I'm not all that crazy about cars to begin with, but something like that tends to make the exception.

  34. @Kay: I like taking shots to compare through the seasons. This one was a good example.

    @Cloudia: those would be the Ottawa locks!

    @Elaine: thank you!

    @Shelly: thanks!

    @Linda: the owner must get compliments on a regular basis
