Swift Whitewaters Of The Rideau River At Carleton

One afternoon in May I went to the shore of the Rideau River at Carleton University. The waters are wild and fast, still carrying the energy of Hog's Back Falls upstream. They pass beneath the railway bridge that carries the commuter O-Train through campus. Compare these views to a post from winter.

This last shot is from a few days ago, taken from on board the O-Train as it passes over the river. I have taken this view before in the winter.

  2. Well it's a bit calmer now! There are few things I like better in life than the sound of roaring water...

  7. @Linda: thank you!

    @Petrea: definitely not.

    @Ciel: roaring water appeals to me.

    @Tamera: that makes three of us.

    @Pat: rough, yes, but that's what appeals to me.

    @Mo: I'd say so!

    @Norma: it would be a challenge.

  9. The water is still so high, yet we've only had 3mm yesterday, and none back to June 24th. My gardens are parched!
    We went on an underwhelming house & garden tour in Burnstown. It was not so great. I'm sure you'll understand.

  13. @Tex: they could be a problem... one has no idea if there are sharp rocks beneath.

    @Jennifer: we got hit by some rain yesterday.

    @Tanya: further downstream it's much more tranquil.

    @Luis: it's a river I've always liked.

    @Country Gal: thank you!

    @Sharon: it would take some guts!

  23. The Ottawa Valley is the whitewater capital, isn't it? I'd stick to the Ottawa River for that. This looks very dangerous!

  24. Looks cold! Dramatic pictures.

  25. That water is absolutely raging. I remember earlier photos of yours from the Rideau Canal, and I came away with the impression that it is slow and lazy. Wrong!

  26. @Judy: thanks!

    @Cheryl: quite a contrast!

    @Eve: they certainly are.

    @VP: most of the river gets frozen over, but this stretch stays open.

    @MB: I've never seen anyone do it.

    @RedPat: it is!

    @Jan: this is typical for the river.

  27. @Stuart: emphasis on rapid!

    @Nathalie: thank you!

    @Kay: and all it's bound to the Ottawa River.

    @Hamilton: I'd never get too close to that water myself.

    @Mari: I think so.

    @Linda: I think the water's cold most of the year. Upstream before the falls there is swimming at Mooney's Bay.

    @Jack: well, the Canal is linked to this river, but up at Mooney's Bay, the two are separated, so the Canal is nice and orderly for its final stretch, whereas the River is wilder.
