One afternoon in May I went to the shore of the Rideau River at Carleton University. The waters are wild and fast, still carrying the energy of Hog's Back Falls upstream. They pass beneath the railway bridge that carries the commuter O-Train through campus. Compare these views to a post from winter.
This last shot is from a few days ago, taken from on board the O-Train as it passes over the river. I have taken this view before in the winter.
Glorious captures, William! Water photos are my favourite!
ReplyDeleteDon't go swimming!
ReplyDeleteWell it's a bit calmer now! There are few things I like better in life than the sound of roaring water...
ReplyDeleteIt must sound so nice. I'm with cieldequimper -- the sound of rushing water is so soothing to me.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful scenes! that is some rough looking water.
ReplyDeleteLooks perfect for white water rafting
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mo. Looks like a good place for white water rafting!
ReplyDelete@Linda: thank you!
ReplyDelete@Petrea: definitely not.
@Ciel: roaring water appeals to me.
@Tamera: that makes three of us.
@Pat: rough, yes, but that's what appeals to me.
@Mo: I'd say so!
@Norma: it would be a challenge.
i'd hate to be caught in those rapids. :)
ReplyDeleteThe water is still so high, yet we've only had 3mm yesterday, and none back to June 24th. My gardens are parched!
ReplyDeleteWe went on an underwhelming house & garden tour in Burnstown. It was not so great. I'm sure you'll understand.
(ツ) from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!
i'd be scared to float that river!
ReplyDeleteWow! Looks amazing William.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos ! Fast rapids that's for sure ! I can just hear it though , wonderful ! Thanks for sharing , Have a good day William !
ReplyDeleteThat water is really churning. Looks like a place for some adventurous rafting.
ReplyDelete@Tex: they could be a problem... one has no idea if there are sharp rocks beneath.
ReplyDelete@Jennifer: we got hit by some rain yesterday.
@Tanya: further downstream it's much more tranquil.
@Luis: it's a river I've always liked.
@Country Gal: thank you!
@Sharon: it would take some guts!
You took some nice pictures of all that wild water.
ReplyDeleteBig difference between winter and summer pix!
ReplyDeleteRivers are full of excitement!
ReplyDeleteCertainly during the summer the river is more lively!
ReplyDeleteCan one inner tube this stretch? Looks nice. MB
ReplyDeleteThat water looks pretty powerful!
ReplyDeleteI love the sight ofd the wild streaming and bubbling water As you know, the water in the Netherlands is muchg calmer. :-)
ReplyDeleteNow that is what I call "rapids" !
ReplyDeleteStrong and powerful waters. Quite impressive !
ReplyDeletePhew! That's a lot of water looking for a place to go!
ReplyDeleteThe Ottawa Valley is the whitewater capital, isn't it? I'd stick to the Ottawa River for that. This looks very dangerous!
ReplyDeleteA mighty river, indeed.
ReplyDeleteLooks cold! Dramatic pictures.
ReplyDeleteThat water is absolutely raging. I remember earlier photos of yours from the Rideau Canal, and I came away with the impression that it is slow and lazy. Wrong!
ReplyDelete@Judy: thanks!
ReplyDelete@Cheryl: quite a contrast!
@Eve: they certainly are.
@VP: most of the river gets frozen over, but this stretch stays open.
@MB: I've never seen anyone do it.
@RedPat: it is!
@Jan: this is typical for the river.
@Stuart: emphasis on rapid!
ReplyDelete@Nathalie: thank you!
@Kay: and all it's bound to the Ottawa River.
@Hamilton: I'd never get too close to that water myself.
@Mari: I think so.
@Linda: I think the water's cold most of the year. Upstream before the falls there is swimming at Mooney's Bay.
@Jack: well, the Canal is linked to this river, but up at Mooney's Bay, the two are separated, so the Canal is nice and orderly for its final stretch, whereas the River is wilder.
You know what? You do a mighty fine job of putting these posts together.
ReplyDeleteNice for a canoeing!
ReplyDeletei wonder how that would work for kayaking? too rough? ( :
ReplyDeletethis looks like my kind of place!
ReplyDeleteLovely series of wild and fast waters!
ReplyDeleteIt does look a bit scary!
ReplyDeleteI remember the winter shots William, what about now in summer, is it a bit calmer ?
ReplyDelete@Whisk: thanks!
ReplyDelete@Jeroen: it would take great care!
@Beth: it depends on the expertise of the rower or kayaker.
@Hilary: it's nice to watch the water here.
@Jose: thank you!
@EG: when I took those shots, the water was quite high.
@Grace: I looked at it earlier today and it is lower water levels now. I'll have to photograph it again soon.
