Muskoka Chairs

Each summer these Muskoka chairs (Adirondacks to you Yankees) are set out in this area alongside Plaza Bridge. It's a nice place to relax, with the Government Conference Centre in the background. This is right across Elgin Street from the War Memorial.

This is more of an autumn shot, one of several I took about a year ago, but from a short walk away on Plaza Bridge, looking south along the Rideau Canal to the Laurier Avenue Bridge. The water in the Canal is already lower than the summer season.

  4. As a "Yank", I never would have recognized them as Muskoka chairs. :-)

  5. Ah, I didn't know the name. One day, I'll own one, along with a porch (and the cabin that goes with it!!!)

    Lovely autumn colours!

  7. Love the red chairs and the amazing autumnal perspective. Our weather is colder now, but we still have sunny days...

  15. @Linda: at some point down the line I would like to have a couple on my property.

    @Jen: thanks!

    @Stuart: well, the design was originally Westport chairs, then Adirondacks. At some point a Canadian started making them. Whether or not there's a difference depends on who's building them. At any rate, they're named for the cottage area here in Ontario. In Quebec they're named for a mountainous area, if I recall.

    @Tomas: indeed!

    @Revrunner: by any name, they're comfortable!

    @Ciel: the cabin is essential!

    @Lowell: red seems to be a dominant colour for them here.

  16. @VP: these days sunshine seems a bit elusive for us.

    @Jane and Chris: it's a great use of the space.

    @Joan: I've been quite used to them.

    @Jose: they're so appealing.

    @Merisi: the Canal view in any season appeals to me.

    @Beth: it is!

    @Tex: they're pleasant to the eye.

    @Jackie: they can be found in many places.

    @RedPat: thanks!

  17. I like that they are painted a nice bright color. It looks very inviting.

  18. They look a lot like my patio chairs. Maybe I'll paint them red.

    But then, if I do, somebody will steal them. It's already happened once.

  22. @Judy: I noticed that I got the sail-sunscreens in the shot as well; they're handy on a hot day.

    @Norma: people can be such a bother at times.

    @Tahiti: it's a common colour for them here, but many people just stain the wood instead of adding on a colour.

    @Sharon: they're good for a seat, but rather low to the ground.

    @Susie: it's quite relaxing, even with traffic on the street nearby.

    @Cheryl: it certainly is.

    @Marleen: they add a measure of cheer.

  26. Okay, you answered my question. I guess they didn't want to admit that Yankees had them first. The color matches the season.

  27. I didn't know there was another name for the chairs. I have always liked the way they look but I don't like sitting in them because it is hard to get back up!

  28. @Jan: they're chairs with character.

    @Kay: I always thought of them as Muskokas.

    @Eve: so do I.

    @Cloudia: they are.

    @Mari: it's an appropriate colour!

    @Linda: that is a problem!

  29. In the US, they're called Adirondack chairs. ;)
    Love them whatever you want to call them - they're simply designed and comfortable.
    And especially love your bridge reflection - it looks like an eye.
