Model Trains For The Collector

Fifth Avenue Court is in the Glebe. It consists of two floors of restaurants and offices surrounding an enclosed courtyard. On one Saturday in late June, the space was taken up by a model train village, with the trains moving in a large circular path. It made for a very different photo subject. One of my cousins is married to a fellow who's into this sort of thing. He's rather quiet, but when he starts talking about this, he really gets enthusiastic about the subject.

  3. One of the places I used to live had a train event every year and people would flock to see it. There's a lot of interest in train shows. Something for everyone! Nice photos William.

  4. When I was a kid, my best buddy was from a rather well-off family. At Xmas, I'd get a shirt and he'd get another Lionel train set. I'd love to play with these things...but they're expensive and take up a lot of space. I'll just have to enjoy your photos.

  9. You're right. People who are seriously into a hobby can really get wound up about it. Try people who fly model airplanes. they're in another world and spend a fortune on it.

  14. When it comes to toy trains, it is not children, but adults who play with them.

  18. This looks very nice. I hope it will be there long enough for many people to enjoy it. The Washington State History Museum in Tacoma has a large model train setup like this. It is a replica of how Tacoma looked in the 1950s when rail was a vital part of the city. Wonderful display!

  19. Wonderful model trains! My grandfather had a Lionel train and he rigged the track to go under the sofa. When we arrived for a visit and sat down, he blew the whistle right under us!

    @Sharon: they really get serious about it.

    @Haddock: there is an expression: the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

    @Tamago: there is a lot of detail to the buildings.

    @Gracita: thank you.

    @RedPat: it can take on a life of its own.

    @Kay: no, this was there for the weekend only.

    @Linda: that sounds like it was fun!

  22. This makes me think of the train set my dad bought for Collin when he was little. Dad was so excited about it (and my dad wasn't the type to get excited about much of anything!)--only to discover Collin had no interest in the train....
