Today is Remembrance Day in Canada, and here and elsewhere it is the day that marks the end of the First World War, a day of commemoration for the fallen of war and those who served. Have a look over at my writer's blog as well for how I'm marking the occasion.
Ottawa is home to the National War Memorial, and it is here today that the national service will take place. A few days ago I passed by one afternoon, just as the changing of the guard ceremony was taking place.
The guards are from each branch of the armed forces, and over the course of a day might do two or three hour long shifts standing at post at the base of the Memorial and before the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. At the time I took these shots, they were Air Force. They are relieved at the top of the hour by a bagpiper, the new sentries, and an overseeing officer or NCO.
The Memorial was designed and unveiled in the months before the Second World War to remember the dead of the Great War. It has since been rededicated, with World War Two and Korea added first, and in more recent years the years of the South African War and the Afghan War included, along with in commemoration of all who have died and served in service to the country.
The Memorial is perhaps best suited to the autumn, and occupies the heart of Confederation Square, where it is surrounded by landmarks like Parliament Hill, the Chateau Laurier, the National Arts Centre, and the Chambers.
Beautiful memorial. Sad that these had to lay down their lives.
ReplyDeleteIt is a mournful memorial.
DeleteWish we could live in peace and those men and women could serve in better ways...
ReplyDeleteIf only.
DeleteWe should learn from them...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely.
DeleteAnd still wars rage on….
ReplyDeleteThey do.
DeleteFor us, the First World War was little more than a paragraph in the history books. Our country was neutral in that war. We do not have any commemorations here. Today we celebrate Saint Martin with children's songs and lanterns.
ReplyDeleteA very different day.
Delete...this is one of Ottawa's impressive spots.
ReplyDeleteIt is sacred ground.
DeleteWell done.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI wish for peace on earth...a very hard image to create, and even harder to live. Much sadness today.
