More from the Mackenzie King Estate today.
What is today a bench might well have been a fireplace mantle at some point, now half buried in the ground.
The next folly is a big one- the Arc d'Triomph, taken from an old building that was being demolished.
The path led onwards.
The Abbey is the most imaginative of the follys here. Using various pieces from buildings around the city and beyond, Mackenzie King designed and had constructed what looks like the ruins of an ancient abbey in a clearing.
The path leads us towards it.
Another quote by Mackenzie King is found here.
And then we are here.
These tell a story. The mantle was saved when the original Centre Block of Parliament Hill was burned, and Mackenzie King brought it here. The crest belonged to a former Speaker of the House at Westminster. And the stones embedded within the hearth came from the printing offices of his grandfather, William Lyon Mackenzie.
