The first day of each month is a theme day for members of City Daily Photo, and for November, that theme is My Favourite Place In Town. Check out how others are selecting for this theme right here.
I am in the midst of a series on fall colours, particularly a visit to Gatineau Park on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River. And so today I begin with one of my favourite places in the region- the Mackenzie King Estate, nestled deep in the Gatineau Hills, and given to the country in his will by one of our greatest Prime Ministers- William Lyon Mackenzie King.
A visit to the estate includes a walking tour of two of the three residences here that he lived in. The third, where he died, is called The Farm, and it is the official residence of the Speaker of the House of Commons.
Panels here at the entrance look at Mackenzie King's life and how he added onto the estate over time. From 1903 to his death in 1950, this was where he spent his summers, entertained his friends and family, and hosted the great and the good. This was the place where he sought solace from a life that was perpetually busy, from being a young lawyer and politician to leading the country through some of its most difficult challenges.
Mackenzie King had a huge effect on the country as a whole. Gatineau Park is one of his legacies, and he left a big mark on the capital itself.
Off to the first of the residences, Kingswood. Quotes from Mackenzie Kings' journal are mounted on the side of the path here and there.
At the gate, a look left and right.
And I continued on.
Nice Autumn day for a walk here.
