The main collection of the Canadian War Museum is organized in a series of galleries chronologically. Along the path towards this area are a series of large scale photographs from Canadian military history.
Warfare has existed in Canada for thousands of years, first among the various indigenous tribes.
Reproduced weapons of those times are found here, and can be touched by the visitor.
An Iroquoian village has been produced in miniature as well. The prospect of war influenced life on every level.
Over a thousand years ago, the first outsiders made landfall. Vikings would settle in North America for a number of years, come into conflict with the inhabitants, and remove themselves for home after it was deemed untenable to stay.
Europeans would return centuries later. The French made a point of establishing alliances with some of the tribes- which would bring them into conflict with the enemies of those tribes in what would be called the Post-Contact Wars.
War is something that humans have practiced ever since...🙄

DeleteThe Iroquois are not remembered for war, but for the Iroquois Confederation, a joining for five tribes, and later six, in peace. This Confederation served as a model for the American Constitution joining 13 colonies in a Union of peace and solidarity. The framers of the Constitution, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson were all aware of the Iroquois Confederation and were impressed by its support of democracy and fairness.
ReplyDeleteThey developed a strong culture.
DeleteA wonderful display and I always learn much through your posts.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
