The first day of each month is always a theme day for members of City Daily Photo, and for this first day of March, the idea is Black and White in Colour. So, shots that appear to be black and white, while still being colour images. You can see how others are interpreting this theme here.
I knew that winter would be ideal for this, and I have a different take on this tomorrow. This first shot was taken in December at Lansdowne during the Christmas farmer markets. The horse drawn wagon can be seen here in a shot largely drained of colour by a cloudy sky.
This is an accidental shot. I was walking up towards Southminster United Church in December to photograph the place when I heard the click of my camera. The resulting shot, though, I liked. It reminded me of being high above a snowy landscape, with the shadows of the snow evoking mountain ranges.
The snow on these branches near the north end of the commuter rail line in Ottawa gave the scene a black and white feel on a mostly cloudy day.
In late December I made a crossing of the Alexandra Bridge across the Ottawa River on a snowy day to visit the Canadian Museum of History over in Gatineau, where an exhibit on Napoleon had been held. The bridge looked stark in the conditions, as did the river and the view back to Parliament Hill. At times on the walk, the view to either side of the river, or upstream or down, was extremely limited.
Beautiful snowy photos. The accidental shot turns out to be a good shot.
ReplyDeleteI like the accidental shot too! Hope things are warming up for you.
ReplyDeleteLovely series. Especially love the view of the distant wagon. Quite atmospheric.
ReplyDeleteSuper contrasts. I love the accidental shot too - I see exactly what you mean - and the shot of the bridge; you could put that on canvas.
ReplyDeleteI like the snowy branches.
ReplyDeleteWith snow around you already have the white and the black items makes the theme complete.
ReplyDeleteLove the last one. Looks like you are an explorer from a previous century!

What a splendid collection. My accidental shots are always totally boring. You got a super one.
ReplyDeleteNice B&W's. I really like the last one of the parliament buildings obliterated by snow.
ReplyDeleteWendy
wow those are so white out conditions. neat shots. love the bridge close up's. ( ;
ReplyDeleteI guess winter provides a bevy of shots for you to choose from! I had a difficult time finding an appropriate one for Theme Day this month, and mine even has a splash of yellow in it at that. My favorite of yours is the 3rd one of the snow on the branches. Nice job, William.
ReplyDelete@Nancy: it did!
ReplyDelete@Halcyon: it is raining this morning.
@Gemma: thanks!
@Mike: thank you!
@Marleen: so do I.
@Marianne: it worked well for the theme.
@Janis: yes it does.
@Lauren: usually they are a blur.
@Wendy: it was quite a snowfall.
@Beth: thank you.
@Susie: I'll look for your take today.
EXCELLENT SHOTS!
ReplyDeleteInteresting shots! One has to be thinking about the idea to get the black and color.
ReplyDeleteYou certainly have the ideal location for this type of photo!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are nice but they make me think that Northern winter must make people yearn for the return of color and light.
ReplyDeleteI am impressed with so many! I struggled to find just one!
ReplyDeleteYour winter lends itself perfectly to today's theme. I especially like the first shot of Alexandra Bridge and the view back to Parliament Hill.
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful collection of thematic photos! I especially liked the third on with the tree branches.
ReplyDeleteAll excellent shots but I figured you'd have at least one of an ice sculpture.
ReplyDeleteMB
Aren't we lucky to live in a geographical area that made it so easy to get these shots for this theme day. Gives us an appreciation for our "creative' landscape during the winter.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures for CDP Theme Day. I like these ones with bridge the most. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful series!!!
ReplyDelete@Cloudia: thanks!
ReplyDelete@Red: it helps to see the list ahead of time- I've got stuff stashed away for some future theme days already.
@Sharon: there were no shortage of opportunities over the better part of the winter to have monochrome shots.
@Dina: some do, but I love the winter.
@Janet: this was a pretty easy theme for me, but the winter made it that way.
@Kay: I love that bridge. It's a marvelous structure. The Macdonald-Cartier bridge downstream, just visible in the one shot, has a more conventional look.
@Lowell: I did as well!
@MB: I thought about it, but I decided not to. I'll be back into the ice sculptures on Friday. I'm getting near the end of putting posts together for Winterlude, but I think the series will still take until the 12th or 13th of the month before I'm done.
@Kate: we certainly get a lot of snow, so it helps!
@Klara: you're quite welcome, and nice to meet you! I've got you on follow now.
@Linda: thanks!
Winter is pretty B&W for us! Nice ones, William!
ReplyDeleteThose are great shots.
ReplyDeleteGads! White out.
ReplyDeleteThe clouds obscuring the sun makes it all so bleak.
ReplyDeleteGosh you were spoilt for choice William.. love all of them but the last three are incredible!
ReplyDelete@RedPat: thanks!
ReplyDelete@Whisk: thank you.
@Revrunner: definite whiteout!
@Mari: we have had bleak days over the winter.
@Grace: thank you! I enjoyed this theme. Already working on the next one!
Maybe we should have required that bloggers living in northern climes show the most raucous color they can! Between snow, gray skies and other wintry characteristics, you nailed it, William.
ReplyDeleteThey are all wonderful photos for the theme!
ReplyDeleteFun photos for the theme William. The accidental one was super.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful selection for the theme, William !
ReplyDeleteThis is particularly fitting today, with snow!
ReplyDelete@Jack: thanks!
ReplyDelete@Lois: they fit the theme nicely.
@Denise: I was quite pleased by the accidental one.
@Molly Jo: thank you!
@Karl: thanks!
@Jennifer: yes, we're back into winter!
Yes, winter is a great time for black and white.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is.
DeleteI really love that last photo!
