Taken during Winterlude one day, this view is of the Bank Street Bridge from the west side. I turned around and photographed the view looking west from the same spot.
This view looks east from on top of the bridge, late in the day on the last Saturday of the festival, the final day the ice was open to skaters.
Downstream from there, I stopped at the Patterson Creek area, an inlet for the Canal which allows skaters to come on in and skate, and took some photos around the area in the dying light of day.
This last shot shows the inlet to the left after the sun has gone down under the horizon. There's a speck of light just at the top of the shot- I believe that's Venus.
I really love this series, William, and I love the colours, light and snow in your photos!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo's did not realise it was still that cold there
ReplyDeleteI guess a canal comes in handy as water or ice. Evening looks good. Sunday night I had a perfect opportunity to star gaze being out away from the city lights but I didn't take it up, next time
ReplyDeleteIt looks so fun to skate on the canal. We only had one weekend with enough ice to skate on....
ReplyDeleteGreat views of the skaters.
ReplyDeleteThe skaters on the canal reminds me of the pictures I have when I lived in The Netherlands. it was a very cold winter.
ReplyDeletei really like the shot with the lamp post!
ReplyDelete@Linda: thank you.
ReplyDelete@Bill: well it is cold again.
@Julia: I love photographing the canal in all seasons.
@Marianne: it wasn't an overly long skating season, but people took advantage.
@Marleen: thanks!
@Janey: Dutch skaters do come here just for the skating.
@Tanya: thank you!
Beautiful series of images William, the light is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteStill ice-skating there, cool !
ReplyDeleteBeautiful title that your shots live up to!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful day in the snow and ice!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful skies skillfully framed by trees. Once again the skating on the canal is a very Canadian view.
ReplyDelete@Grace: it was a very good day, that twilight day, for sky conditions.
ReplyDelete@Karl: not anymore, though the rink at City Hall remains open.
@Cloudia: thanks!
@Sharon: definitely!
@Red: it's a marvelous asset to have, this canal. I wonder what Colonel By would have thought, his canal serving as a skating rink.
Thank you for such beautiful takes.
ReplyDeleteThank you also for your visit to mine. Your so kind.
Sorry I am late. Been suffering with headaches.
Your photos of snowy days in twilight are so beautiful.Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAhh, that time of day is always nice after a day spent in the chill air. You captured the mood perfectly. I didn't realize the canal was only open to skating during the festival. I thought you could skate there all winter.
ReplyDeleteWendy
What fun it would be to skate there!
ReplyDeleteReally nice photos William!
ReplyDeleteI always thought all those people were skating, but now I see that some of them are walking.
These are all superb photos because they allow the viewer a sense of being there. The first one is especially good as is the one through the tree trunks. But I loved them all! Well done!
ReplyDeletePretty cool.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so nice in the sunlight.
ReplyDelete@Carolann: you're welcome.
ReplyDelete@Klara: thanks!
@Wendy: it depends on the weather. Some years it can go straight through from early January into March. Other years we get a shorter skating season.
@RedPat: many people do so!
@Pat: yes, there are walkers. I do it myself. It's easy to stroll, once you're used to it.
@Lowell: thanks!
@Whisk: I think so.
@Catalyst: it does!
I love these snowy photos, especially the first one with the bridge and the ice skaters.
ReplyDeleteAmazing to me to see so much ice, especially on a day when I was biking in my shorts and short-sleeves. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt does look pretty with the sun going down.
ReplyDeleteThe last shot has an eerie quality to it. Nice.
ReplyDeleteYou've shown the more beautiful and enjoyable sides of winter here. After some miserable days I needed a reminder. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSkating is one of the best winter sports.
ReplyDeleteIt must be a great place to skate.
ReplyDeleteSkate on the frozen river, reminds me the Dutch winter paintings.
ReplyDeleteI love these.
ReplyDeleteTwilight gives a great effect doesn't it.
All the best Jan
These are some really good captures!
ReplyDelete@Denise: thank you!
ReplyDelete@Revrunner: your spring is earlier than ours.
@Lois: I think so!
@Mari: it does.
@Kay: you're welcome.
@Kate: a lot of people do it.
@Jack: it's well used!
@Beatrice: I can see that.
@Jan: it does.
@Norma: thanks!
