Courtyards

One of my favourite areas in the city is a warren of cobblestone courtyards and old stone (and not so old) buildings in the Byward Market. The courtyards are quiet, home to a number of restaurants and cafes that use outdoor patios in season. It's peaceful to walk through any time of the year, a very pedestrian friendly place. These shots were taken about a month ago.

    1. Particularly when I took the shots... now the weather's kind of turning to inside dining.

    1. I've spent time with friends at some of the restaurants in these places. It's a wonderful locale on a nice evening.

  3. After reading your recent comment on my NE fall color post, William, and seeing these photos, they must have been taken in the spring or summer not to have a coating of white now.

    1. I have taken pics here before in spring or summer, but these ones were October. We had a bit of a warm month, so the leaves took their time, at least here.

    1. They really are, even for the no longer living. There's a ghost story in these courtyards. I'll have to look it up sometime...

  7. I do love courtyards like these. Mount Vernon has one similar courtyard that several restaurants open on to.
Stanwood had a nice cobblestone courtyard but the building became empty and finally sold and someone tore up the courtyard. I haven't been in town for awhile to see what else is going on. MB

    1. It's the sort of place that really should be preserved. These kind of places are a rarity.

  10. Oh, yes, these are my kind of places. Any place I can be lazy and sit and watch people pass me by . . .

  11. I love courtyards and cobblestone streets. They were my favourite part of Europe and they're not as common in my hometown.

    1. They are uncommon this side of the Atlantic.... though Quebec City does some nice stuff with cobblestones.
