Winter

After the rather gloomy subject matter of the last couple of posts, it's better to brighten things up. The Museum was also holding an exhibit on snow, dealing with how Canadians cope with winter. It featured vehicles, clothing, various items, and hands on displays about the very best season of the year (yes, it is the best season, quiet, you in the back heckling!). It was certainly a breath of fresh air after spending time among voodoo relics.

Tomorrow we'll start looking at the permanent collection.

  4. That second one would be a good vehicle to commute in.

  5. Fascinating. Love those vehicles. I'd guess Canadians have been most resourceful in dealing with wintry weather!

  6. Linda: thank you!

    Linda: especially this shade of red.

    Ciel: I wouldn't mind having it!

    Lauren: these items stand out nicely like this.

    Stuart: they would!

    Lowell: quite so, at least those who didn't flee for Southern climates all winter.

  7. I love those old snow vehicles, but if all winters will be as warm as the last one, we''' never have to use it overhere.

  8. Sends chills down my spine just looking at this! I could use one of those snow shovels, by the way . . . but hopefully not until next winter. ;-)

  13. Well red does show up quite well in the snow. We just get tons of rain in the winter so maybe snow would be fun for a change. MB

  14. That show vehicle in the second shot is very striking. I like it!

  15. My husband used to use a "snow cat" in the winter when he had to go up on top of the mountains to repair phone lines. Not as fancy as the ones shown here though.

  16. I agree, Canadian winters are great! German winters I don't care as much for though (although this year was not bad). Love the old snowmobile. :)

  17. It is fascinating to see this, considered that we have some snow once in a few years. Everything is even more strange and deliciously old fashioned!

  18. @Jan: well, they come in handy here.

    @Revrunner: next winter can't come soon enough for me!

    @EG: I'm crazy about winter!

    @Denise: I thought so!

    @Tanya: I figured there'd be hecklers!

    @Jane and Chris: I expected you to heckle!

    @Tex: it's something entirely different.

    @MB: a winter of rain would drive me up the wall.

    @Luis: I enjoyed it!

    @Sharon: they're quite old fashioned.

    @Judy: I've been in one of those snow cats before.

    @Halcyon: Canadian winters, aside from the BC lower coast, are wonderful seasons!

    @VP: I was definitely struck by how old fashioned the equipment was.

  20. Wow, the sledge in the first photo is fantastic!

  21. What a fun post! Would love to ride in those sleighs.

  22. They used some pretty interesting vehicles in Alaska too. After our brief fling with Spring we're heading home today and back to reality--4-6 inches of new snow.

  23. Okay. No heckling here; however, one wonders that there may be some dissonance in the description of people needing to "cope" with the "very best" season. Regardless, this is interesting and much more fun than voodoo and all the red makes for great shots.

  24. Those raquettes are a treat! I remember the first time I tried them - I thought they were hilarious until I tried walking with them.

  25. @RedPat: I wonder if they still run...

    @Karl: it looks quite comfortable too!

    @Bibi: so would I!

    @Norma: I expected you would be!

    @Elaine: here we can still get snow anytime, but it won't stay for long.

    @Kay: the red stands out very well against the white backdrop they've used for the exhibit.

    @Aussie: I've used more modern snowshoes. It takes some getting used to.

  26. It's not something we have to contend with much here snow, more a mere flutter, but when we had the freak snowfall last year he island came to a standstill. The sidecar on skies, I love. That's perfect for my island motorbike isle.

  27. The deep red colour is great. Do you know what years that second (teardrop sled) was from?

  28. Loved that second one if it has a heater inside.

  29. The first sleigh and the second looks really special!

  30. I think it is time to change your header, speaking of winter! I love the changing seasons, but I'm glad winter is done.

  31. @Jane: here we're used to it. In fact today it is snowing.

    @Hamilton: no idea, but I'm inclined to think 1920s-40s.

    @Mari: it probably would have one.

    @Zannnie: I agree.

    @Jennifer: winter's still here today!
