Looking at this picture, I'm reminded of Long Way Round, the documentary series following Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on a motorbike trip around the world. On more than one occasion the two remark on how they don't know this or that about the place they're in. Such is the case with this, taken in the Bytown Museum on Colonel By Day. Usually with a digital camera I'd photograph the display tag as a reminder of what it is for reference in a post, something that'll come in handy, for instance, in an art gallery. Instead I find myself looking at this picture and wondering, "so what was this about again?"
Anyway, the display has something to do with weights and measures, I think (fingers crossed), about blocks in the building of the Canal by Colonel By and his work crew.
intriguing
ReplyDeleteyoull have to check that out next time you go as well as photographing those dolls
I really liked Long Way Round! I also take often pictures of tags and plaques, but it keeps happening like that...
ReplyDeleteI'm often curious how people of previous eras were able to pull off some pretty amazing engineering feats with so little machinery.
ReplyDeleteI do that too and forget sometimes also :) loved that series could watch anything Ewan McGregor is associated with 😀
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Grace--I'll watch anything Ewan is in!
DeleteI often take photos of plaques and signs to help me remember...but admit I sometimes forget too. Ah, the price of being somewhat imperfect!!!
ReplyDeletei always have such a great plan ... i will write things down and i will remember it when i go to post and darn-it if i don't get enough to jog the memory. why of why? i guess we are only human. right??! ( :
ReplyDeleteGreat movie! I photograph everything. ;)
ReplyDeletetoo funny. :)
ReplyDeleteLike several others I recognize the problem of forgetting to make a shot of some information too. You'll have to go back there sometime, I think ... :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are funny. I do that kind of thing all the time. Hate to be bothered with details and have to write something down so I just take the picture and move on and then wonder later what the hell is this? :)
ReplyDeleteHere in Spain, we call that the box of the fleas.
ReplyDeleteWhen a thing is something rare.
Tomás.
You're a better man than. I would have just kept walking... next exhibit?
ReplyDelete@Jen: I definitely will!
ReplyDelete@VP: it'll definitely come in handy in the National Gallery.
@Revrunner: it was a whole lot of ingenuity and hard work.
@Grace: the two series they've done together on motorbike trips have been fun.
@EG: so it's a common thing!
@Beth: we are indeed.
@Luis: so do I, mostly!
@Tex: thanks!
@Jan: I will. There's something in there that'll come in very handy for a theme day next year I've been asked to take care of.
@Lowell: I'd have to carry paper around all the time!
@Tomas: that's a new term to me.
@Birdman: I might feel like walking!
I was in the By museum but had forgotten all about it until you showed this photo and it triggered a memory.
ReplyDeleteAh so I'm not the only one photographing display tags? Nice.
ReplyDeleteI might repeat ceil's comment above. I'm not the only one.
ReplyDeleteFine photos. Good post about blogging. 🍁
ReplyDeleteWe actually have a copy of Long Way Round - I love those 2 guys together. I too take pics of the signs and then worry about it later.
ReplyDeleteI have seen that show and enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday.
PS: Leftover sub today. Yum.
I've taken to doing just that with things/places I think I'll forget...photograph the plaque or sign.
ReplyDeleteI also photograph the info tags, but I also tend to forget..
ReplyDeleteKind of looks like a game. Are sure it's not a hockey style game? Pull the levers? You are entirely too young to have a memory problem but maybe it's a sign you should be writing instead of photographing everything. LOL( I love all your photos).
ReplyDelete@Red: it's an interesting place to wander through.
ReplyDelete@Ciel: it seems to be a common thing!
@Sharon: it's a good habit to get into.
@Cloudia: thanks!
@RedPat: the two of them are quite fun to watch.
@Whisk: thank you!
@Pat: it's something that comes in handy.
@Marleen: some items I know so well I don't have to photograph the tag or plaque, but others, I must add that on.
@Eve: well, pulling the levers was about lifting the blocks, as I recall, though a second look shows one lever's absent!
Hmmm. It does look like it's to do with something mechanical, doesn't it? So that rules me out as being able to enlighten you!
ReplyDeleteYes I photo the labels too
ReplyDeleteI loved that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman show. I didn't see them all but every time I came across one I would be transfixed. I have quite a few photos that I took, forgot to make a note of it by taking a photo of its description and then left with me thinking what on earth did I take this for again?
ReplyDeleteAs good as guess as any.
ReplyDelete@Norma: I thought you'd say that!
ReplyDelete@Cheryl: it's definitely mechanical, which isn't my strong suit.
@Gerald: it's a good habit to get into.
@Denise: I've seen both series, the trip from London to New York and the trip from Scotland to South Africa. And that seems so very common for us!
@Mari: I imagine so.
Been there. Done that. Trying to get more diligent about shots of labels and other interpretive detail.
ReplyDeleteThat canal building was huge in the last century!
ReplyDeleteSomething to do with science :-)
ReplyDeleteI loved Long Way Round. It is interesting looking (whatever it is)!
ReplyDeleteI have problems like this all the time. Especially, if I visit more than one place in a day (that are similar). I usually take a photo of my shoe, to indicate where the cut-off is between one place and the other.
How about the Motorcycle diaries. Che and all that! I loved that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your visits & positive comments. Not feeling great this week.
@Kay: I've done it the odd time!
ReplyDelete@Janis: it was.
@Teanu: thanks!
@Pat: that's a creative idea!
@Jennifer: you're welcome.
