Christ The Saviour Orthodox Church

Christ The Saviour Orthodox Church is found in Chinatown in the downtown core. It has its roots in two parishes, one dating back to the First World War era, the second dating back to the 1980s. The current building was erected in the late 1960s by the first parish. The parishes merged in 2003 and worship here in this beautiful sanctuary, quite different from Catholic and Protestant designs. I have been inside during Doors Open. If the church is taking part this year, I'll have to stop in.

  1. Orthodox churches are usually spectacular inside. But don't plan on sitting (at least the really traditional ones don't have pews)!

  4. Looks very different as usual churches. We don't have churches like this, or I think so so...
    Happy May.

  8. If I had to guess, I would have selected many before landing on a church.

  9. Quite unusual!
    I heard on CBC this morning that they are unveiling a new statue up there - tribute to John McCrae who wrote In Flanders Fields.

  10. That is very different for a church. The domes are usually a much more prominent feature. I look forward to seeing the interior.

  11. That is a completely different design. I'm now sure I would have recognized it as a church without a sign.

  16. @Janis: I have been inside during previous Doors Open, but missed getting there last year. It is a beauty inside.

    @Peter: the design of this one's stunning.

    @Orvokki: I don't imagine there's a large Orthodox related population in your part of the world.

    @Revrunner: it's more square than the conventional rectangle.

    @Marianne: it is an interesting design, visually speaking.

    @Tomas: we have some here, including, oddly, a block or so near this one.

    @Jan: those blues really stand out well against the white.

    @Luis: thanks!

    @Birdman: this is one of those cases where 60s architecture was done well.

  17. @Tex: thanks!

    @RedPat: that might explain a couple of things going on downtown that I noticed before getting in.

    @Red: I expect it'll take part in Doors Open. I just have to figure out my schedule in advance for that weekend.

    @Sharon: and yet inside it's unmistakeably a church.

    @VP: it's less conventional than other Orthodox churches in its style, I think.

    @Judy: as do I.

    @Norma: we do!

    @Whisk: it's quite a difference from Gothic style.

    @Marleen: I did too.

  18. Doesn't look like a church to me! More like a library or something!

  19. It certainly looks like a church with the cross on the top, different and nice building, and the sky is gorgeous!

  27. it may be different, but it is a beautiful building and the Cross (more than one) is there. That tells the world it is Christian.

  30. It's a very beautiful 'non church like' building William, although the windows give a little hint :)

  31. I think Grace's term "non church like" building is just about right.

  32. How interesting that it's now situated in a part of Cinatown! Although it doesn't have a steeple, it does have a dome and also the blue often associated with Greece.
