We begin today with these, from the workshop of Dieric Bouts, circa 1485-95: Diptych Of The Sorrowful Mother And Christ Crowned With Thorns.
Lucas Cranach the Elder painted Venus around 1518, depicting the Roman goddess of love.
A rather morbid painting that always draws my attention. Eve, The Serpent, And Death is by Hans Beldung Grien, and dates to 1510-15.
Christ And The Adulteress is another work by Cranach, done in 1533.
Barthyl Bruyn The Elder painted Christian von Conersheim and His Wife Elisabeth von Brauweller in 1544.
The Crucifixion, circa 1515, is a painting by Quinten Massys.
Moving paintings, with much more human expressions than sometimes seen in religious works.
ReplyDeleteTrue.
DeleteNude and religious scenes.
ReplyDeleteAn unusual combination.
DeleteLa mayoría de las religiosas, tienen un gran dramatismo. Eva, cuando la tentación, no había reparado siquiera en que se encontraba desnuda.
ReplyDeleteFeliz domingo.
Thank you.
Delete...religion has been a popular subject matter for art.
ReplyDeleteVery much so.
DeleteAh that Eve! Think of all the trouble she caused!
ReplyDeleteHah!
DeleteYour right about Eve, Death and the Serpent!
ReplyDeleteI think its dark nature is why I like it so much.
DeleteI wonder what those talented artists would have actually chosen to paint if choices were more freely made.
ReplyDeleteWho knows, but you went where the money was.
DeleteLots of religious themes in this group.
ReplyDeleteThere are.
DeleteReligion & nudity. What a combo.
ReplyDeleteOf course.
DeleteAll so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteMorbid is Eve and her companions for sure. The look on her face has more enigmatic depth than, dare I say, the Mona Lisa.
ReplyDeleteI can see that.
DeleteReligion seems to be a popular subject for these painters.
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
DeleteWonderful photos of this latest exhibit.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteExpressive hands in the Eve. All edifying William
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteI like Venus the most in this collection.
