The Rideau Canal And The Chateau Laurier

Alongside the Bytown Museum and the walkway down to the Ottawa River, there are plenty of chances to take in the  Rideau Canal here at the Ottawa Locks. Depending on the size of the boats, six of them can fit into a lock at any one time. These boats are heading up from the River onto the Canal, and they have a total of eight locks to travel, ascending a height of 24.1 metres (79 feet) from the river to the passage of the Canal through the city; from here the next set of locks are up at Carleton University. It can take an hour and a half to ascend or descend the locks.  Having the Chateau in the background certainly makes for a pleasing image.

I had to look twice at the pic when I first saw it. The person on the forward right side of the nearest boat looked naked.

  1. Accidental photo captures can be interesting! But this photo is rich enough without a naked person

  3. Two good reasons to say that Ottawa is wonderful, the Rideau Canal and the Chateau Laurier.

  5. That takes a long time to get through the canal. I can't imagine that someone would stand naked there with all the public around. An exhibitionist, or is it the light?:)

  6. Six boats in one lock? Impressive!

  7. is that odd about so many boats? around here they are always very very packed. i wonder? ( :

  11. Wonderful shot, but I don't think the person on that boat is a bare naked lady. She is probably wearing a pink bikini. ;-)

  12. @Cloudia: thank you!

    @Revrunner: it does take time to fill and drain those locks, after all.

    @Tomas: thanks!

    @Anna: very much.

    @Marianne: it's the light and what she was wearing. I remember the woman, and I definitely would have remembered if she'd been exhibitionist!

    @Denise: it does get packed in there!

    @Hilary: I still have to look twice!

    @Beth: I've counted them in a lock, and there's really no way to fit more of them in there. So if there are seven boats waiting at one end, one will have to stay behind until the others make the transit.

    @Tanya: I figured I'd better bring it up!

    @Stuart: and they're still in fairly good shape nearly two centuries on.

    @Norma: oh, it was a she!

    @Jane and Chris: obviously I'm not a mariner!

    @Jan: I think it was something like that, yes.

  13. Now that's a photo where I recognize the location! And yes, she does look rather naked, doesn't she!

  14. There's a lot of money represented by these boats. That would be a fun trip up the canal. And I do love your imagination! Naked, indeed!

  15. Hmmm...I see what you mean. Are you sure she wasn't naked?

  16. Looks like rush hour on the canal.

  17. Boating this canal would give another perspective of the canal.

  18. Hahahaha!
    It wasn't THAT hot was it.

  19. Hmmm. Traveling through the locks au naturel would be a traffic stopper!

  22. @Furry Gnome: had she been, I definitely would have noticed!

    @Lowell: a lot of people with a good deal of money.

    @Sharon: pretty sure!

    @Judy: it was quite a busy weekend on the Canal.

    @Tex: I wonder if by chance this blog will ever fall under her eye.

    @Red: next summer I should try one of the canal tour boats.

    @Birdman: not quite, but it was a warm day!

    @Luis: thanks!

    @EG: it certainly would.

    @Mumbaiiteanu: thanks!

    @VP: thank you!

  23. What fun to live in a city with locks!

    Yes, he does look naked. Bet that would have caused a stir in the onlookers!

  24. Busy time on the canal! A naked person would have gathered a bit of a crowd. ;-))

  25. I am guessing this is from the archives. Soon we'll be seeing skaters there!

  26. A truly idyllic canal. A lot of locks, and many boats, does not get bored when you can watch the beautiful landscape and keep track of other boats people, may be confusing to see even the naked man :)

  27. Locks have always fascinated me, but I have never seen one in person. I would not have seen that naked looking individual had you not pointed it out!

  28. @Cheryl: it would have, but it was a woman!

    @RedPat: especially with all those kids around!

    @Halcyon: there'll be a big difference in a few weeks!

    @Marleen: I found it amusing!

    @Orvokki: thanks!

    @Ciel: it offers many photo ops!

    @Hilary: thank you!

    @Lois: I've gotten used to them, but I enjoy them.

  29. Have a book or your e Reader with you. Not going any fast.

  30. There are some very high class boats working their way through here. And I'd have not caught the naked traveler if you hadn't pointed her out. It actually looks like she's wearing a pink dress...not particularly nautical. But then, it's quite an upscale vessel.

  31. It sure looks like it would be fun to ride on one of those boats!

  32. What a very picturesque backdrop to the locke William.. nah she's not naked, there's a bikini on that bod for sure :)

  33. This brings back lovely memories. Surely the woman had a flesh-coloured suit/!!!??? Maybe not!

  34. clever of you to make us look more closely at the scene!

    ReplyDelete
  35. At least you have a great view while waiting your turn. By "great view," I am not talking about the person in their birthday suit.

  36. @Mari: true.

    @Randy: they are!

    @Kay: even now four years later I still find myself looking twice.

    @Jack: alas!

    @Janis: it would.

  37. @Grace: upon second glance!

    @Jennifer: yes, flesh coloured.

    @Gerald: thanks!

    @Shelly: indeed.

    @Pat: hah!

    @Jose: thanks!
