With snow now upon us I decided yesterday to switch out my header for the blog for a winter shot. This one was taken last winter at Central Park in the Glebe neighbourhood.
Joseph Brant was a Mohawk leader who led Mohawks and Loyalists during the American Revolution. Following the war, he and his people settled in southwestern Ontario.
Here we have several items of the period: a camp colour flag, a Scottish dirk, and an officer's gorget.
A timeline of the events leading from the French and Indian War to the outbreak of the Revolution is laid out here.
Early in the Revolution, rebel troops under Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold (yes, that one) invaded Quebec. They were ultimately driven back, with Montgomery killed and Arnold retreating with his army, off to eventually betray his country and go down in history as a back stabbing, side-winding weasel.
The Americans would win the Revolution; Loyalists would come north and settle in the Canadian colonies. A few decades later the Americans would have a go at it again in that dust up we call the War of 1812. Some weapons of these decades are displayed here.
This is a model of H.M.S. St. Lawrence, which lies today in the waters of Lake Ontario at Kingston. Naval hand weapons are displayed as well in the case.
Yes. I froze instantly seeing your banner! 1 C here.
ReplyDeleteImpressive ship.
Nice blog header, looks very cold with such thick snow. Nice display of war weapons.
ReplyDeleteYour header image is so atmospheric!

ReplyDeleteThe snow pic in your Header is amazing. 😀
Hello,
ReplyDeleteLove your header photo, very pretty!
Great exhibit and impressive ship!
Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend.
@Iris: thank you.
ReplyDelete@Nancy: I thought so.
@Italiafinlandia: indeed.
@Sandi: thank you.
@Eileen: thanks!
...we have just a little snow and it's melting. The War of 1812 is viewed differently by those on each side of the border.
ReplyDeleteOMG! Love that header. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat header. We have snow here too, but not for long. It is forecast to climb to 14 degrees on Saturday, with rain!
ReplyDeleteLove that new header.
ReplyDelete,
Lovely header! Beautiful model of the HMS Lawrence.
ReplyDelete@Tom: it certainly is.
ReplyDelete@Revrunner: I had that one in mind.
@David: the same will happen here.
@Marie: thank you.
@magiceye: thanks.
I didn't know about that ship being in the water at Kingston.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that Benedict Arnold led an invasion, and I suppose the non-American side can view him as a patriot to Britain.
ReplyDeleteAmazing what happened with the transportation technology they had. Awesome new header.
ReplyDeleteI like that model of H.M.S. St. Lawrence. And it's a nice shot as well without any reflections.
ReplyDeleteI like the new header! Winter is here.
ReplyDeleteAwesome header photo ~ great historical post ~ ^_^
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend to you,
A ShutterBug Explores,
aka (A creative Harbor)
I see winter arrived, stunning header!
ReplyDeleteYour new header is really beautiful. That looks like a lovely park.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand snow. :)
ReplyDelete@RedPat: it is probably best known locally.
ReplyDelete@anvilcloud: I think of him as a traitor, even though he ended up on our side. The British never trusted him with real responsibility either. The irony is that his wife led him to the betrayal, and had he died of wounds sustained earlier in the war, he'd be remembered as one of the great heroes of American history.
@Red: thank you.
@Jan: that can be a challenge.
@Sharon: in one way or another.
@Carol: thank you.
@Bill: thanks!
@Jeanie: it is.
@Midge: snow rules!
