The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a crossroads for Canadian soldiers, and it is detailed here with artifacts, displays, and a video feed about the battle.
A topographical map of the ridge is seen here.
Allied solders had failed to take the ridge from German hands time and again. It was given to Canadians to make the attempt. From April 9th- 12th, 1917, Canadian soldiers fought the Germans at Vimy and did what seemed impossible: taking the ridge and achieving victory. It was a costly victory that won them much respect, and it is considered a watershed moment in the country's history.
Shrapnel was one of the real killers of the war.
This graphically depicts the difference between damage by a bullet and damage by artillery shrapnel.
And here we have some shrapnel, as well as a cutaway of an artillery shell of the period.
While here we have one of the field guns that was firing them.
Across from it are panels and artifacts looking at the dawning of war in the skies. We'll get into that tomorrow.
Another sad moment in history...
