Knox Presbyterian Church is downtown, a neighbour to City Hall on its north side. It is a regular participant in Doors Open. The congregation dates back to 1844, and the current building is from 1932, a mixture of English Gothic and Norman styles.
On the south side of the building is this lovely garden courtyard.
Inside the main part of the building, the sanctuary appears spartan but spacious, with a graceful wooden ceiling, and stained glass windows at both ends.
The arches and columns are a splendid touch.
Here we have a piano and the pulpit where the chancel begins.
This looks back towards the entrance of the church, with a stained glass window in the upper loft.
This is the chancel stained glass window, on the east end. It is the design of a Scottish artist, William Wilson, and has the theme of the coming of Christ. It dates to 1955.
A different perspective of the pulpit.
And on a nearby wall, plaques commemorating those who died and fought in the two world wars. We'll pick up here tomorrow.
Why was the chosen architecture in 1932 a mixture of English Gothic and Norman styles, do you think? Were they copying a specific model somewhere?
ReplyDeleteAspects of it were influenced by Prime Minister Mackenzie King, who was a member of a different Presbyterian church in the city, but took an interest in this one, and who liked those styles. Part of it was also the architect, who worked in those styles and had built several places of significance.
