My last Doors Open visit was to a familiar spot- Parliament Hill. The website had mentioned access would be possible to have a look at the work in progress, and that intrigued me. The rehabilitation work will be going on for several more years- as you'll soon see.
A zoom in at the clock, which has an observation deck directly below.
I headed for my destination, behind the boarding around Centre Block.
East Block has some things happening to it as well, but mostly section by section.
West Block presently houses the House of Commons.
Beyond, gates that are normally shut were wide open, and the visitor could make their way along a platform and look and see what's been going on. I'd known there was an excavated pit in front of Centre Block, and had seen it, but it doesn't photograph well through mesh when you're looking at it through closed gates. This is very different being able to see it properly. The work includes a completely new visitor centre and redesign of the approaches to Centre Block.
Design concepts were on display- eventually the courtyards of Centre Block will be enclosed with glass roofs, making them interior spaces, and the visitor centre will take that into account.
The concepts fascinated me, even though it'll be years away. More from here over the next two days.
Looks like a big job. The new version would look so great inside
