It was past time to switch out my header image for something of a summer sensibility. This choice was taken last summer near the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
More today from Doors Open on Parliament Hill, with these design concepts showing things to come.
I find the pit itself as a worksite to be a good photo subject, and having those vehicles down there reinforces how big it really is.
Staff were on hand to answer questions from visitors about the process of the work.
This included a couple of tables about stonemasonry work, with masons taking questions from visitors. Most of these are casts of existing sculptures inside the building, or things perhaps to come, as Centre Block was deliberately built with plenty of stone spaces for carving in the future- space which hasn't run out.
I headed out for a bit, passing between Centre Block and West Block. On a hilltop here are two statues. One of them is Queen Victoria.
Some quite interesting sculptures you have found
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteA lot of work going on there. Great photo of the pit with the excavators deep down below. It reminded me of the mining pit in Australia where you can also see those huge excavators.
ReplyDeleteAnd presently dwarfed.
DeleteWow, those construction vehicles really look like toys. Amazing how this was done in the first place back in the day - how long did it take to be build?
ReplyDeleteSeveral years. This is the second Centre Block, after the first was destroyed by fire in 1916. But rehabilitation is more complex, including things like seismic measures. And the structure to be built in here will eventually be completely hidden anyway.
DeleteNice to see...
ReplyDeleteI think so.
DeleteGreat series of photos. I like your new header shot, idyllic scene. The construction sight is gargantuan. What an impressive building that is going to be.
ReplyDeleteIt's a huge project.
DeleteInteresting post about the works and I like your new header.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Delete...a busy life is a good life!
ReplyDeleteTrue!
DeleteTis a fine header. I don’t have one and so I never have to change it. I wasn’t always like this, though. 🤓
ReplyDeleteI like changing headers each season.
DeleteHello
ReplyDeleteLove the sky in your new header. The pit is huge, the vehicles look tiny. Take care, enjoy your day!
Thank you!
DeleteI liked the sculptural objects...not always sure what they were.
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of imagination that goes into them.
DeleteDelightful header!
ReplyDeleteIt was time to switch out.
DeleteThat is one huge dig!
ReplyDeleteYes it is.
DeleteI guess we will always have statues of royalty in this country.
ReplyDeleteAnd I find that a good thing.
DeleteAwesome header photo and great series of Parliament construction photos ~
ReplyDeleteWishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,
A ShutterBug Explores,
aka (A Creative Harbor)
Thank you.
DeleteI like your header, it looks like my home, where I walk, only instead of a meadow there is a faded rapeseed field, but the same color, the same mood.
ReplyDeleteArchaeological sites are fascinating. culture is invoked.
Happy weekend to you.
That entire area is fringed with meadows.
DeleteYour new header is beautiful, I like it.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteListening to the stone masons must have been interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt was.
DeleteThe depth of that pit is awesome. I like the carvings. Are they going to use casts or have real carvings done?
ReplyDeleteReal carvings. They make a cast as a concept, and then carve into the stone.
DeleteNICE new header!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThose diggers are busy, i do like seeing different carvings.
ReplyDeleteMe too.
DeleteStunning photos - and stunning buildings. I was wondering whether there would be a little about Bastille Day!
ReplyDeletePerhaps the French embassy puts on an event?
DeleteIt is wonderful to see such work carrying on
ReplyDeleteI think so.
DeleteThe architecture is amazing!
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteI like your new header. The stone work images are particularly interesting and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
