Winter Would Be Welcome Anytime Now

"But how can we appease the mighty Snow Demons if we don't sacrifice any leaves? We'll have a warm winter." ~ Calvin
"I don't know whether your grasp of theology or meteorology is the more appalling." ~ Calvin's Dad

Some much missed banter from Calvin & Hobbes that fits nicely, I think. I took a series of shots inside the Ottawa Convention Centre back in early March at a time when I had a glut of Winterlude photographs, so they went unpublished. This one looks out through the glass wall at Confederation Park and City Hall, while the Rideau Canal passes beneath the Mackenzie King Bridge. The ice is not at present in such good shape!

Over at my writer's blog, my review for The Hobbit is set to post at the same time as this post, so have a look by clicking there to the right.

  3. Nice photo. It looks cold on the outside.

  4. Everyone in the photo looks appropriately cold. Few places colder than atop a bridge in winter.

  5. Winter is slow in coming this year. We had ice here a few weeks ago but most of it is now melted...or just starting to refreeze.

  6. It's the same in our area too but I'm afraid we're going to get a cold blast of air for the week before we get the ground covered in white again.

  7. @Whisk: thanks!

    @Tomas: thank you.

    @Jen: it certainly was.

    @Andy: yes, it was.

    @Revrunner: you certainly feel the wind crossing that bridge. I've done that many, many times.

    @EG: we're back to a cold morning today here.

    @Pamela: it seems the same here as well.

  8. Nice shot with all those lines.
    Living in a small country the differences can still be big. In the southern part of the Netherlands they had al lot of snow this weekend, but overhere in the north the world is still green. I could some winter too meanwhile ...

  10. it hasn't been very wintry here yet..we were having perfectly warm sunny days until yesterday, now it's cold and rainy...nice shot!

  11. Yes. I prefer snow, as long as things are so drab brown. Even the evergreens seem brown in spots.

  12. I like the composition.
    A cold wave started hitting us and temperatures will drop to near 0ºC at night in the Lisbon area, which is too much for us! :-) Glad the sun is shining here but it's snowing up north.

  13. Nicely framed . The longer you look at this the more you see.

  14. It's looking very cold outside that window.

  15. Nice scene through there. I'm sure that winter will get there soon. Better late than never. We are predicted to get snow on Wednesday. We will see.

  16. I like that crisp sky! Looks really cold though.

  17. I like very much how you framed this. Cold weather is here too, temperature is going slowly toward O°C...

  18. We had snow last night....on the eve of the day when I had three errands to do downtown...I picked my way along. Cold, too, and wish the snow would go....

  19. Great photo, I love the composition! It's been much warmer than usual here this month. Wonder if we ever have snow this winter.

  20. @Jan: weather conditions can be greatly varied here as well. We might get a snowfall here that isn't happening at all down along the St. Lawrence River an hour's drive away.

    @Tex: winter must come... sooner or later!

    @Tanya: today we have sunny skies, but cooler temperatures.

    @Jennifer: yes, the drabness of the ground tends to be offputting. We need snow to replenish things.

    @Jose: here it's below that mark by at least a few degrees, but we're used to cold winters.

    @Red: the glass wall of that building is marvelous for photo opportunities. I'll never get tired of taking shots in there.

    @Sharon: it was!

    @Judy: I haven't looked at a forecast, but at least the temperatures here are going in the right direction.

    @Marleen: cold's a good thing!

    @VP: we need freezing conditions to get the Canal in skating shape.

    @Marianne: I want the snow to get here!

    @Tamago: it's been a few days of warmth here, so we lost a lot of snow we had.

  21. I love all the lines and angles created by this window. We got 12cms of snow last night. At least I didn't have to shovel it! :)

  22. The longer it takes winter to come, the shorter it will be - Hurray!

  23. Looks really cold. Lovely shot.
    Mumbai is colder this time as we are actually shopping for winterwear this winter.

  24. I agree, it's disconcerting when winter doesn't arrive.

  26. The window in the foreground makes it seem as if you are inside a Christmas ornament.

  27. Winter has arrived here at last with snow in the East of the country and -3° C tonight here in Quimper which is very cold for Brittany but ooooooooh so wonderful with those crystal clear blue skies! I'm a happy camper at the moment! Love this photo with all the lines. Hope you are feeling a bit better.

  28. @Denise: thanks!

    @Halcyon: we could use some of that snow, but at least our temps have dropped.

    @RedPat: no, we could use winter well into April!

    @Mumbaiiteanu: winterwear in your part of the world means it must be cold!

    @Linda: I'm getting impatient!

    @Cloudia: any time now!

    @Janis: a very big ornament!

    @Ciel: I'm getting there slowly.

  29. I do miss Calvin & Hobbes big time! I wonder what ol' John Calvin would have said about that "theological" remonstration? So, are you telling us that you miss the snow?

  30. Here in Abeuzzo is coming wave of cold and snow, I hope tanto.Belle Your Photos

  31. Nice perspective. I'd rather skip winter though!

  32. Nice shot!
    And oh, how I miss Calvin & Hobbes! (And The Far Side, too.)
    Hope you're doing better these days and are ready to march into the new year with both knees working...

  33. Good pic. It is winter in the desert and the possibility of snow exists. Bah, humbug.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Lowell: young Calvin's peculiar world view was bizarre, to say the least!

    @Filonico: and here we do have the cold.

    @Cheryl: winter's a splendid thing!

    @Kay: I miss both strips, but they went out while the creators were at the top of their game, unlike staying around and becoming... Hi & Lois.

    @Mari: snow would be glorious!

  35. I remember two years ago how the people up north were aghast at how difficult the winter was. Now I am reading about how people are impatient for the winter to get underway. Odd, isn't it?

  36. I would think you all would have snow before us. We had snow on Christmas evening and we're expecting more on New Year's day.

  37. IT seemed so much colder last year...
