An End Of The Line

 Even in this strangest of winters, the Rideau Canal skateway is well used. Even if one of the skaters seen in this picture happens to sport a hockey jersey marking them as one of those sad, poor, wretched lost souls known as Leafs Nation. Give it up, people: this is not going to be their year. Or next year. Or the year after that. Or the year after that.

They're never going to win the Stanley Cup again. Because God hates the Maple Leafs. ๐Ÿ˜

A look back towards the lake.

And another take on that footbridge.

I kept walking. The Hartwell Locks, the second set of locks on the Rideau Canal, were ahead.

Another shot of the Arboretum was in order.

And another look back.

And finally the end of the line, at least for the skateway. I had to walk back towards the top end of the lake, since home's that way.

But first I wanted to photograph the Hartwell Locks. A boat is being stored in one of the locks over the winter. This is typical.

I looked back at the way I came.

And then it was time to get going again. More of this series tomorrow.

  2. That was a long walk to and fro. Do you need special shoes to walk on the icy lake to avoid slipping?

  3. Awesome! I do like to walk on frozen surfaces...

  4. Awesome! Pedestrians no longer have to cross the river only on the bridge ... they can "walk on the water"! Right?

  5. Peaceful pics.
    That is what I liked when we had snow, the silence.

  8. @Catarina: not a chance. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

    @Nancy: no, nothing like that. Just regular winter boots.

    @Italiafinlandia: this is good to walk on.

    @Ella: true!

    @Iris: snow can lead to quiet days.

    @Anita: more winter shots to come.

    @Eileen: thank you!

  10. Wonderful canal photos ~ but my philosophy is to "Never say Never' ~ The Mapleleafs could win ~ one never knows ~

  11. Such a dramatic change that makes to the area. The animals must like being able to cross over. I wonder if they do?

  12. Well, my son from Tampa was pretty happy about the Lightnings taking Stanley home this year. Y'all just better keep trying!

  16. My poor late father, whose birthday was today, would be totally offended! He watched them for most of his life, I think.

  17. It's hard to believe that you get a stretch of canal that covered in ice you can walk on

  18. @Magiceye: thank you!

    @Tom: quite true.

    @Carol: possibly, but I certainly won't count on it.

    @RedPat: I imagine some do, like squirrels or foxes. I know that there are deer around, quite elusive. It's possible they make a crossing on occasion, but that would be deep in the night.

    @Sharon: a very long walk.

    @Barbara: the first step the Senators can do to eventually build themselves to a Cup run is to trade their miserable SOB owner.

  19. @Karl: I was knackered at the end of it.

    @MB: thank you!

    @Bill: thanks!

    @Jeanie: you're welcome.

    @Jennifer: I suppose I'd probably be more charitable towards the Leafs, but my idiot ex-brother-in-law was a fan. Hence my particular dislike for the team. If they ever win the Cup, I'll have to eat a lot of crow.

    @Bill: and it's the sort of thing that draws people to it.

  22. Must be great to be able to skate on a frozen river. Enjoyed these and your header shot is fantastic!

  23. It's a wonder the boat isn't crushed by the ice.

  24. What a great walk. Wish I could change our rainy and stormy weather for some winter again.

  25. @DJan: it was one of those typical winter days.

    @Marie: ah, but Leafs fans deserve to be tormented.

    @Denise: it's quite an experience.

    @Revrunner: actually as the lock is nearly drained of water over the winter, they put a boat onto a sort of scaffolding. Effectively it's in drydock for the winter.

    @Jan: today here it was above freezing.

  26. William - you DO take your hockey seriously, don't you? I have commented before about how much I like this canal in the winter - makes me wish I hadn't given away my ice skates when we moved!

  31. @Angie: I hate, hate, hate the Leafs.

    @Gemel: yes, it was.

    @Anvilcloud: but not much.

    @Beth: we get a lot of overcast in the winter.
