From Bridge To Bridge

 A closer view at the Bank Street Bridge as I approached from the east. Skaters were moving faster than I was, but that's to be expected. For the walker, the Canal surface makes for easy walking- often easier walking than the sidewalks.

Here we have another stadium view at Lansdowne.

I crossed beneath the bridge, taking these views from the west side.

Turning around, I photographed to the west. Between here and Dow's Lake, the Canal does a bit of gentle curving, but not like the big bends further back towards downtown.

Continuing on, I took one more shot of the Bank Street Bridge before I went around the curve.

I proceeded on, photographing in either direction as I went. I'd earlier decided that depending on how my mobile battery was doing, I could have left the Canal at Bank Street or continued the whole way. It turns out there was enough battery power to make the whole trip in one go.

My last shot for today features the last of the bridges to cross the skateway: the Bronson Avenue Bridge. Beyond it the Canal widens out into Dow's Lake.

  1. I don't know why ice worries me - it's almost as if I think someone is going to fall through into the cold water. Looks freezing cold there though, hope it thaws out for you soon.

  3. Hello,
    Great views of the canal and bridges. I have not skated in years, I wonder if I could even stand up on the skates without falling. Take care, have a happy day and a great new week!

  4. Last winter I noticed that nowadays I get tired much faster because of the smoothness of the ice, that's why I am so happy with this beautiful long virtual walk on the ice with you.

  6. Ice sailing down the canal would be fun if they were allowed, and the wind coperates.

  7. @Amy: the Canal is stable. I would never cross river ice.

    @Italiafinlandia: indeed.

    @Ella: not for two months here.

    @Eileen: thank you.

    @Jan: I enjoy showing it.

    @Tom: it does.

    @Maywyn: indeed.

  11. I like the different bridges. Does someone check to make sure the ice is still thick enough for skating and walking?

  15. How beautiful your city is under snow and ice.

  16. It’s beautiful out there! But not being familiarity all with such conditions, I don’t quite understand how you can walk on the skate path, isn’t it too icy?

  17. @RedPat: yes it was.

    @Iris: yes, no tulips until May.

    @Sharon: it was quite a day for a walk.

    @Red: that I did.

    @Fun60: they have work crews monitoring the ice for safety. Based on their work, a decision is made when the ice is ready, and when the season comes to a close.

    @Grace: we'll have snow here awhile longer.

    @Bill: it certainly is.

    @Marie: not that day.

    @Revrunner: indeed.

    @Marleen: it was.

    @Gemel: that it is.

    @Sallie: it's a matter of being careful how one walks, but it's easiest to walk along the side of the skateway, where there's a thin layer of snow left on top of the ice, and that's easy to walk on.

  18. That looks like a great place to skate. I skated all the time, as a kid. I might be out of practice.

  19. plunged into winter, quiet a shock, this passageway of great length is a novel way to get around and a fun time, fast too. the posts reveal all, you always present a faithful record. Be careful what you wish for i was keen on a cold winter experience but our south was rather unpleasant and it was relatively hot - in different circumstances am still willing to try true coldness.
