Byward Market

The Byward Market is both a neighbourhood and a market building downtown. The current building dates back to the 1920s, but there were markets here almost from the beginning of the city's first days. These days the farmer's produce is sold mostly by outdoor vendors around the building, while the interior has been taken over by restaurants and small shops.

You can get a view of the interior from above, looking down on the restaurants and shoppers below.

Hanging over the space below is this unusual sculpture.

  1. I visited the market when I was in Ottowa. It was lovely and the prices were more reasonable that what we had in Toronto!

  10. I like that sculpture. I makes me think the vendors and butchers and bakers of the past have gone to heaven.

  11. @Halcyon: there's a restaurant at the north end that I like... a mix of bakery and sit down restaurant. They're still selling Obama Cookies from when he stopped in.

    @Ciel: It's got to be light, but that sculpture is big!

    @Gerald: they really are!

    @Tamera: thank you!

    @Revrunner: I'm usually passing through there three times a week.

    @EG: it's a very eclectic kind of building.

    @Tanya: it doesn't have the prefab kind of feel of a shopping mall.

    @Inna: thank you!

    @Cheryl: right now it's very cold, so southerners would wonder where the warmth is!

    @Grace: I'd be inclined to check out that Cafe 34!

    @Sharon: that's a good way of looking at it!

  16. @Norma: a place I'd like to see!

    @Krisztina: it's a very easy building to find here.

    @RedPat: it's been up there as long as I've been in town. I'm sure long before that.

    @Stuart: the key is that the building is well used.

    @Hamilton: it does fulfill both mandates. The President stopped in here on his first visit.
