This is a new addition to the museum, a short animated video that feels quite real, projected onto a curving screen. The crew of a corvette duels with a German U-Boat. The visitor feels like an unseen witness, on the bridge, above, and at the waterline.
The U-Boat threat brought the war close to home, with coastal defenses ramped up, and German attacks and operations carried out along the coast.
This is a model of one of those U-Boats, U-190.
And this is the full scale size of one of the weapons of a U-Boat: a torpedo, residing here in the collection.
Above it are multiple panels and image about how close to home the war came.
U-Boats were the one thing that really frightened Churchill, in his own words. Their captains and crew were lethal and effective hunters, and the Allied fleets that took them on had to be just as lethal and effective in hunting them.
Audio-visual supports are quite useful in museums.
ReplyDeleteThat they are.
DeleteScary. I´ve been in such a U-Boat. I am small, but this was so cramped, it was scary!
ReplyDeleteThe sick bay there was even scarier (it was in Wilhelmshaven).
To imagine to be underwater....
Everything I have heard of them, they were very cramped.
Delete...war is conducted everywhere!
ReplyDeleteIt is.
DeleteThat sounds like a great new exhibit!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good addition.
DeleteThe film would certainly enhance the visit:)
ReplyDeleteI like the concept.
DeleteScary stuff.
ReplyDeleteThat kind of battle would have been.
DeleteThere were some very scary tactics used.
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
DeleteThat must have been interesting to see.
ReplyDeleteIt was.
DeleteThat looks quite scary. I got seasick going around Peggy's Cove in a boat. I don't think I'll watch this!!!
ReplyDeleteThat said, we have been watching High Arctic Haulers, and the other one where they fish. Horrid conditions.
I don't think I'd get seasick.
DeleteGreat post and photos of the coastal defense ~
ReplyDeleteWishing you a peaceful day,
A ShutterBug Explores,
aka (A Creative Harbor)
Thanks.
DeleteI expect that watching that video is a tad eerie.
ReplyDeleteIt is.
DeleteCoastal defense, another critical part of the war.
ReplyDeleteThat they were.
DeleteThis looks like an exciting and interesting exhibit.
ReplyDeleteIt is.
DeleteMy father in law was a us federal agent who hunted sabotuers and u boat operations on the eastern Sea board.
ReplyDeleteQuite a way to spend the war. U-boats were all over the coast.
DeleteIt's creepy, thinking of the U-boat so close to home.
ReplyDeleteAnd they were.
